Of Moss and Fairies

My friend S. works at a tree farm. Moss grows along with the seedlings. Now that I'm writing about it, I don't know if it has to be removed or it falls off while they are packing the trees for shipment, but in any case, she brought me a collection of little moss pieces to put into my fairy garden.

It is so hard to take good pictures of it. I struggled mightily to get these few, that don't do it justice.

I don't know if this moss will 'take'. I tried to nestle it down below the granite sand layer so it was touching soil. We'll see. Moss is such an appealing plant. I would love to cultivate it somehow. For now I think it will do fine because of the cool temperatures.

In one of the moss clumps, there was actually a little tree! It would take a minor miracle for this to survive I think. But miracles do happen, from time to time.

And finally, here's a drone's eye view.

This has been a pleasant winter pursuit. 'Gardening' on a micro scale. As much as one can hope for in the last days of January.

I wonder if it will ever get covered in snow? Chances seem slim right now. I guess all the WINTER is vacationing back east at the moment.

Stay warm everyone!

You have no idea how much joy your fairy garden pictures have brought me!

I like moss too. It is usually the first thing to green up after winter, and I like to watch the different phases it goes through over the summer.

I'm happy to hear that! I am just about to embark on finding some kind of tutorial on propagating moss. Up on the hills behind me, there are some really impressive areas with very pillowlike carpets of moss. I'd like to get it to grow by the front porch where I have the little bowl that catches water from my dripping hose most of the year. All kinds of animals come to drink there. It's a nice thing to think about on this chilly day.

I am trying to send some of this snow your way but it is not cooperating it just keeps falling here i admit defeat for the day i will deal with it all tomorrow i am done

Ha! My friend S. and I decided the other day that from now on we are giving ourselves permission to call 'quitting time' on ourselves! Sounds like you know all about that. 🤣
