Kanban In Progress
Fri Jul 29 2016

I've just returned from the garden. It was like making a foray into hostile territory to rescue vegetables. I don't know the temperature. All I know that it's only 10 in the morning, and the outdoors is no longer hospitable. I dug up two potato plants, picked several large kale leaves and thinned the small onion bed. My plan is to make soup later. I also pulled up several heads of romaine lettuce that are trying to bolt and gave them to the girls. They make short work of anything green that is tossed in their run these days. So my plan for the rest of the day is to hole up in the house and do what I can in here until the sun goes down. *** In other news... When I visited my son and daughter in law quite a while back, I noticed a bulletin board that was hanging in their kitchen. I admired it right away. I asked my son where he got the idea for it and he told me it was a Kanban board. I had never heard of such a contraption. Evidently it's a system that lots of companies use to track work flow. Here's the simplest form... iur And here's one that's a little more complicated... project-kanban-004 Whoah... Now I don't have that much to keep track of, but I was noticing that my dayplanner pages sometimes were just too tucked away in the notebook and I realized I needed something more 'in my face'. So I made one and attached it to my fridge. DSC01733 So far, I'm enjoying it. I like that you can put a task in the middle there and know that things are progressing, even though they aren't finished yet. It's comforting. (I wonder how long it's going to be before she starts putting weird things on there like: Check Pulse, or Contemplate Navel. Anyone want to place bets? I mean she's a grown woman. What's wrong with a piece of paper and a simple list? This looks like something from a kindergarten class...) Hey, I know what to put on the To Do list! DSC01734 (Ummm... can we talk this over?) Tell you what. I'll put it in the In Progress column. (Hey, you know now that I think about it, this is a darn good system you've got going on. Clever. Forward thinking. Efficient. One could possibly even use the word "elegant". Nice work!) Suck up. (Team player.) Waffler. (Fast learner.) Whatever.   lime-wild

Love the idea. Thinking about using it to rein in my quilting and knitting projects.

I'm glad (I think) to know that there is another sticky note queen in the family. I get razzed about my kitchen cabinet flurry of stickies frequently. I love the system, but might need a larger section for "To Do" - - - ! Hope all is well in Siskiyou County.

We use kanban at work - it's great to be able to see all your tasks at a glance, and I love the satisfaction of moving a post-it to the "completed" section :-) Our boards only have enough space in the "in progress" box for a single post-it - it's supposed to discourage multi-tasking (though I sometimes sneak in a few layers of post-its on a really busy day...) And we have a rule that if you've run out of room in your "to do" section, you've got to start saying "no" to new tasks!
