The weather people say we might get a thunderstorm today. That would be fun. I’m waiting...

I toodled out into the back yard to see what was going on and found a few things hiding in the rather unkempt conditions. I’m TRYING to stay on top of things out there, but with limited mobility, I have to pick my battles.

Over in the corner, hidden in the ivy patch, an infant hydrangea is indulging in delusions of grandeur. . .

I’m okay with a limited amount of mental derangement in my world.

(We have noticed.)

I’m not sure yet, but I think this might be the Japanese Truffle tomato. Though I heard it isn’t Japanese at all, but of Russian origin. Who knows how these rumors get started?

And here’s a picture of the raised beds right now...

They are in good shape, as I give them weeding and watering priority. There are other places that are going rogue.

I’m going to have to do something about it soon, or end up in total surrender to chaos in a few weeks.

It’s astonishing to me how quickly things get out of hand in a garden. Truly.

As soon as I get the okay from the doctor, [appointment on the 7th of July] I’m going barefoot into the garden and kick some chaos booty.

In the meantime, I am directing my energies to running everything that isn’t nailed down through the washing machine today. Dog begs, couch covers, towels, rugs... boy, I wish I could throw the dogs in the washer and dryer. That would solve a lot of problems around here.

(It wouldn’t solve the MAIN one.)

I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.

(I know. THAT’S the problem.)

Your comment about putting dogs in the washer and dryer reminds me of the old joke about how to wash a cat:

    1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.

    2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water.

    3. Obtain the cat and carry him to the bathroom.

    4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape). CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for anything they can find.

    5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective.

    6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.

    7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

    8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself.

Making drinking glasses out of glass bottles requires a bottle cutter. It is a glass cutter that is made to score a straight line around the curvature of a bottle. The score becomes a stress point in the glass, and with some gentle tapping you can usually get the glass to fracture just under the score line.

Once you knock the top off of the bottle, you still have sharp edges to deal with. I'm not entirely sure how you melt those down slightly without breaking the glass, but I imagine careful torch work might do the trick. Conversely, if you had a large enough kiln (I do not) you could bring the glass just up to the melting point to melt the sharp edges. The problem with doing it that way is that the entire glass will slump a little bit unless you have a mold to hold it in shape. A final way I can think of doing the edge finishing is with a polisher and grinding powder, but I don't know much more about that than they use a process similar to that to grind the glass mirrors for big telescopes.

I didn't just LOL at the toilet cat bathing, I howled! That was the funniest thing I've read since I don't know when. Way to lighten up a heavy, rainy morning, Sal. Thanks!

The yard looks great especially when one considers how many weeks you've been unable to work. All your early spring work really paid off.

Your tomatoes look great..... mine have yet to set anything though I have seen a few flowers so maybe soon.
