RYC: The silt is because most of Christchurch is built on sandy soil with a lot of moisture in it. Apparently the shaking forces the water to the top, pushing up fine sand with it. Apparently it just gushes out of the ground like a fountain.

I got my lovely little leash-handled bag! It's so cute! The puppies won't fit in it, but the stuff they need for outings sure will! Jethro smelled it all over, inside and out, several times.
