Slow Lane
Sun Apr 23 2006

My favorite part of my trip to the mountains was the day I drove down a familiar country road. I wanted to take a few pictures like I promised and I thought this was a likely place to look for some good views. I kept looking in my rear view mirror, because where I usually drive around home, there is ALWAYS someone on your tail cursing you for being in their way.

But that day, I could see a mile behind me, and no one was in sight. I decided to go exactly the speed I wanted to which was taking my foot off the gas pedal altogether. Since I have an automatic transmission, the car keeps going forward. I mosied along at what I estimate was just a bit quicker than my walking pace. I enjoyed the view. I admired the willows that were just starting to leaf out. I got a real good look at someone's new fencing job using a construction technique that was new to me. I decided it was a pretty effective way to do it.

It's been a long time since I could go just as slow as I wanted to in a car. I reveled in it.

Slowly.

But today I will have to put it in high gear, as I am headed home. It'll probably take every penny I have with me to pay for the gas too. The price has gone up since Wednesday.

But I won't mind so much, I'll just think about the day I drove as slow as I pleased.
If you pass me going south, I'll be the one with the smug smile on my face.
