Lentils 101

I have been meaning to show you my big lentil harvest.
I pulled up the 4 or 5 plants that grew and let them dry out in the sun on an old tablecloth. I stomped on the plants when they were dry and the lentils mostly spilled out of their casings. Then I was left with a whole bunch of chaff from the plants. I brought a fan out onto the patio and winnowed the lentils with that. It worked great.
Though the volume of lentils for all that work was a little disappointing...
Here is Fiona commiserating with me...

However. I learned that they are easy as pie to grow. You just need to plant a lot of them if you are planning on feeding yourself for any length of time.
Write that down.
Then I give you a picture of what I am pretty sure is the fastest germinating plant I have ever encountered.
Crimson Clover:

I planted it on a Wednesday, and it was up on Saturday. And I mean UP. Not thinking about it, not shy, not tentative. UP.
This is going to be interesting.

Isn't there a song about Crimson and Clover, Over and Over?
Maybe I have the words wrong.
Those lentils will add some nice flavor to a soup. At least they produced. :o)

How close do you have this to your lawn? Will Crimson Clover be as invasive as the regular clover that is the bane of homeowners everywhere? If you want to keep it in the bed and out of the lawn, fertilize the lawn with a fertilizer high in Nitrogen.
