How Does Your Garden Grow?
Mon Mar 31 2003

It’s a warm day here today. I have been out in the garden weeding and getting some flower beds ready to plant. I have a VERY scientific method of planting. I opened about 10 packs of assorted seeds and poured them all into a plastic bag. I intend to sprinkle them on the bed, cover them with some potting soil and whatever comes up gets to live there. In the bag are Calendulas, Bachelor Buttons, Marigolds, 4 o’clocks,Poppies, Strawflowers, Sweet Williams, and I don’t know what all else. What I usually end up with is a cottage garden kind of yard. There is very little rhyme or reason out there. I move plants around like furniture. And frankly sometimes it looks like it too. I will never get high marks for “garden design”. I am going right for the “high volume” effect. Plant a googleplex of seed, and hope enough of them grow to fill up the space.

I had an area last year where I grew Creeping Zinnia and Ensign Morning Glories which are low growing plants. They were beautiful. I let them go to seed and this spring I had a little nursery full of plants to transplant. And I certainly have, here and there and everywhere there are transplanted flowers.

The re-planted tomatoes are up and looking good. I hope this batch makes it, otherwise I am at the mercy of whatever the nurseries have in the way of plants.
Not my first choice. I would rather grow heirloom tomatoes.

The willow tree in the front yard is about half leafed out and is making a nice shade. It is growing like a weed. I can see it from work room window. We also removed the support stakes from our London Plane tree in the front yard today. It looks so much better that way. Anyway, it’s Spring popping out all over here today and all the sunshine is making me sleepy. I think I need a nap.

Get your planting and weeding done while you can. It's gonna rain again.

Wasn't it a nice day, though? I love being able to open windows. The living room got warm enough that I turned on the fan.

I planted an Early Girl tomato one year. The bush was HUGE, and I had tomatoes well into the fall.

*Sigh* Is it possible to have garden envy, even when you have a black thumb? Your garden sounds gorgeous.

    Take Care
