Today I am surrounded by the fruits of my labor. It started with this.. Basil   Three kinds of basil. I toasted some almonds, because I didn't have pine nuts, and made pesto with this. Most of the batch is in the freezer in an ice cube tray, but just enough to spread on  homemade pizza dough, is waiting patiently in a little bowl in the fridge. I have decided that pesto is just about  the most amazing concoction on the planet. Who was the genius who came up with it?   I gathered the first picking of green beans from S.'s garden,  since I am caretaker there for a few more days, and have harvesting rights during my tenure. I added a few from my own vines. Here they are... Green Beans   They are cooking on the stove right now, making the house smell well and truly of summer. I also had crookneck... Crookneck and tomatoes   I'm going to make a pesto, crookneck, tomato pizza after a little while. I will TRY to take a picture of it before I dive in. I realize this is turning into a foodie blog lately. But frankly, there's just a lot of wonderful food hanging around in my kitchen these days! I am reveling in it. And feeling very grateful to have a garden of my own.   lime wild

You have reminded me I need to go check my green beans......... I do believe I saw a few the other day that were nearly ready...... and some broccoli.... and kale .... and swiss chard. (That's a lot of ands.) Yes it is...... but it's a lot of produce AND I don't quite know where to begin. Maybe something will come to me after I pick the tomatoes. Dang that basil looks good, I can almost smell it from here. Wish I had thought to put some in. :)

Mmmm, pesto on pizza, my favourite. Especially with a little chicken tossed in thai sweet chilli sauce.

Pesto is fabulous! You will be so happy to have those pesto cubes in the dead of winter. Just take half a diced onion in some olive oil, add a can of crushed tomatoes, a splash of red wine, a sprinkle of dry oregano and a little can of tomato paste. This sauce tastes rather bland and boring on its own, but when you add one or two of those little frozen pesto cubes it turns into the most divine summery pasta sauce you've ever tasted. That, and a nice glass of cabernet or zinfandel turns a cold, bleak winter's evening into something really special that just might save a person from cabin fever. P.S. FYI: I can't seem to leave comments at the old DD.
