In Which We Muddle Through
Thu Sep 18 2008

Pal is still with us, though under careful supervision.

We don't have a place for him yet except to go to a kennel until the weekend, and I don't want him to go there unless there is no other choice right now.
He's not a bad dog, he has just been a neglected dog.

Dogs need people. They need to interact. We have bred them to be domesticated companions, and when they don't get their people fix, well they just turn into ... problem dogs.

I don't think Pal is beyond hope. He just needs some intensive socialization.

I mean here he is minding is own business.... he's not a really bad dog.... [Ignore the fact that he is tied to the computer desk...]

***

I heard a rumor that it was supposed to rain here tomorrow.

I checked the weather forecast and no such thing is in the cards. Wonder where the nasty rumor got started? I'd like to kick that person in the shins for getting my hopes up.

Rain.

Sigh.

I've been putting it off all week, but I need to go out for some groceries. And I am toying with the idea of going to the bookstore to treat myself to a new book. . .

Maybe I should get a self-help book for people who think they know something about dogs but really don't, but try to help said dogs even though all they really know is that they love dogs in general and Shelties in particular and want them all to be like a certain exemplary individual named Robbie.

Wonder if it's in stock?

I could read it aloud to Pal... ?

(That is a stretch even for you Cupcake.... I mean really.....)

Well, it isn't any crazier than a forcast of rain in September in this neck of the woods.... I mean this neck of the dried up crispy fields of baked dead grass.....

Sigh.

I need a hug, a dog whisperer miracle, and a good soaking rain.

And I don't think I'm gonna get any of 'em.

    Awww. Not even a hug?!

What you say about socializing a dog holds true for people. We are social creatures, and so far, a dog fits in our scheme of things.

Too bad Pal dosn't want to romp with Sunny. He's missing a lot of fun!!

    Bless

I know it's not the same as a real hug, but I'm sending you cyber hugs just the same.

The skies here are black and heavy, the rain will start any minute now. How bout I go stand in it and think really hard your way?

Once upon a long time ago I used to do volunteer work in the hospital wing at the SPCA so I got to see some of the worst neglect cases. The upside being I got to see how those poor creatures blossomed under proper care and attention :) Time and love can produce some real miracles in dogs. I just wish we could 'fix' the human animals that caused the neglect in the first place!

I can do nothing about the weather.

I do not know a blessed thing about dog whispering or producing miracle cures.

What I can do is join my fellow cyber-huggers and send you a ((((HUG)))) from up north.

Don't let it get you down. The rains will come and things have a way of working out for the best eventually. They will here too.

All i know is try rewardig his tolerant behavior ( if you can get any out of him even for a minute ) with treats and praise, the second he trys to attack, take his leash , turn him the opposite direction away from sunny and no treats...sounds dumb but I've seen it work before don't expect results the first time or two do. The dog soon learns that he gets praise and treats depending on how he behaves with the other dog...for this to be done properly both dogs should be on a leash also for their own protection. I'm far from a dog whisperer more of a dog screamer lol! BUt I hope this helps. ((( hugs from MI. where they would trade some of your dry weather as they tread water left over from hurricane ))))))

It rained here night before last. I swear. Big drops. But just enough to dampen the pavement and put big, muddy spots in the dust on all the cars. We have rain predicted for tomorrow afternoon/evening. I think it's one of those rains that is more likely the closer one gets to the Oregon border. But I'll bet that is whence the rumor came.

You know where to get a hug real fast -- I am only a few houses down my friend! Sorry that things are not working out with Pal with Sunny. You are doing a wonderful thing and job with the shelties you have fostered so far. Sometimes there are just things that make it impossible for us to help.
