Brain Dots
Wed Mar 19 2003

Thanks to all who suggested good books to read !

I have a list as long as my arm to take to the library. And what a nice assortment too! I hope to get to a lot of these in the coming months, in the midst of all my Jeremy Rifkin reading :-)

Rather than gluing myself to the TV today, I have been outside cleaning out some old planters and planting them with fresh seeds. I pulled out the nasturtiums that really took a beating in the last wind and rain storm. I will miss them. They sure were a welcome splash of color all winter long. I planted Poppy seeds, Portulaca (which I have never grown) and miniature Zinnias. The seeds were given to me by a friend. They are last year’s seed so they may not come up as reliably as they could, so I planted them thick.

All this keeps me from listening to the news people, who are beside themselves with hyperactive imaginations. I quickly get tired of listening to “speculation”.

I am curious, is anybody doing anything out of the ordinary to “get ready” for possible disruption of day to day life because of domestic terrorism?

I did go to an emergency preparedness web site this morning and realized that I could be a bit more organized in case something happens. But it seems such a remote possibility that anything drastic will happen, it is hard to get too worked up about it.

I may have to eat those words later. I sure hope not.

Actually, I think I AM a little nervous, but am suppressing it by distracting myself with trivia. The reason I say this is that the next thing that popped into my mind to ask you is: Has anyone tried Cherry 7 UP ? (It’s good by the way)

But here is how I came to that thought. I was thinking that it would be a good idea to gather up a little fresh water in case of an emergency. Then I got to doing a little mental inventory of available empty containers that I might have on hand for that.
Then I did another mental inventory of the other liquids we already have in the house, (juice, soda, that kind of thing) and I remembered the Cherry 7 Up I polished off last night. The empty plastic bottle is in the kitchen. I could fill that bottle with water.

I have always found it interesting how the human mind works. How it connects the dots in it’s quirky way. The disturbing thing about this process is the radical difference in importance between preparing for a possible terror attack and Cherry 7 Up. But my brain cannot be bothered with sorting things according to priority. It just feels compelled to churn out the connections and let the dots fall where they may.

So here I am left with the possibility that the only thing I am going to do to prepare for a theoretical terrorist attack is to fill an empty 20oz Cherry 7 Up bottle with water. . . .

I think I need more dots.

I gotta go now.

Where do you go to find your dots? I haven't found any to connect. Maybe I'll stumble over a cache somewhere.

I, too, have blown off the "preparedness" thing. Or maybe I just don't understand the problem. ;-)
