So.
This morning, I heard the dog barking again.
I figure.. another opportunity for fox photography.
I suited up. Boots, down coat, gloves, wool hat.
Camera.
Good to go.
This time he was up a different tree, farther out into the brush.
I had to climb a fence, and crawl on my hands and knees under the buck brush and manzanita.
Cougars did run through my consciousness.
I kept following the barking and came upon the dog, and her owner. They were looking at Mr. Fox who was in a lower position on a tree in a lovely pose.
We had a chat about the situation and I reached for my camera.
Imagine me doing an imitation of Columbo…. patting down my pockets….
No camera.
Lost it in the brush.
Really???
So I told the neighbor I had to go find my camera. He went home and took the dog.
I was wondering how long Mr. Fox would hang around in the tree after they left.
I'm retracing my steps… and crawls… in the bushes. I wasn't EXACTLY sure I was going back the same way.
Well, after wandering around for several minutes I finally spied my camera hanging from it's bright blue cord on some buck brush.
GREAT!
So I hurried… ha ha…. back through the bushes and saw Mr. Fox still in the tree. Tantalizingly close. I figured I could use my little zoom and get close enough to count the whiskers on his nose.
I braced myself on a small oak tree to get a nice steady shot, and turned on the camera.
This is what I saw on the screen:
BATTERY EXHAUSTED
Really???
Yeah. Really.
Mr. Fox must have sensed my weakened psychological state, and quickly removed himself [quite gracefully] from the tree and trotted off into the brush.
He looks much smaller on the ground by the way.

Bummer.
REALLY big bummer.
Nice to know Foxy Loxy is hanging around though. Maybe there will be another opportunity.
