The entire neighborhood is a buzz of activity these days. Everyone is aware of the coming rain and we are all scrambling to get some of our fall chores done before it gets here.
I spent two solid hours in my garden this morning, clearing out the corn stalks, old green bean plants, trimming up the kale and getting it ready for winter, and decided I would wait no longer to harvest the pumpkins.
The plants were very large and I have had glimpses of the pumpkins growing under there. But I was not quite prepared for the actual number that eventually revealed themselves.
Yikes! All this from just two plants!
These are called Lil Pump-Ke-Mon pumpkins. I think that's a silly name. But they are adorable nonetheless. As a matter of fact that word is even used on the seed packet!
What it doesn't mention is whether or not they are edible. I'll have to look that up. BRB.
Yep, they are edible. It looks like I have plenty to admire for decorations, give to friends, AND experiment with cooking the little darlings up. I'll let you know how that goes.
In the meantime, I'm going to focus on the admiring part.
Though I may only get time to glance at them now and again, as the garden cleanup is not finished and S. bless her, drove up here late in the afternoon with a load of wood in her pickup and we emptied it out by my back door. Stacking wood has now moved to the top of the list for tomorrow.
You never know what blessings are going to come your way in October, here on the edge of the big woods.
