I took myself and my tools over to the meadow across the ice pond yesterday to set fire to a small pile of brush and branches that had been waiting for the right weather conditions.
It burned very nicely.
While I kept an eye on it, I inspected my little shelter area...
I didn't make very much headway in my little plan. The summer turned so hot. And then the fires were so bad, going outdoors was just not possible with all the horrible smoke. But maybe this year I'll get more done. I now have a fairly large area of disturbed soil with no grasses growing [out of frame] to broadcast some more Baby Blue Eyes seeds. I keep hoping they will naturalize themselves. There HAVE been a few plants that reseeded themselves and bloomed, so it could happen!
I sat near that little bush on my coat in the sun and wrote in my journal while I tended the fire. It was warm, if a little breezy.
That was yesterday.
Ummm....
This is today:
Yep.
The 'little breezy' was blowing in the long hyped and hysterically touted winter storm.
A little late to the party. I mean really, it's almost March!
But very welcome.
Garden beds all made up with blankets:
25 degree morning:
I think we got about 5 inches... I haven't measured exactly.
Notice the netting that hangs over the chicken yard to keep the hawks away? It was laying on the ground. I had an interesting time freeing it of snow. I was covered in white by the time I was finished. I'm going to have to tie it up to the fence again in a couple of places. It's happened before. It's pretty sturdy stuff that netting.
Finally, here's a photo for CB, so she can see how the chicken house and yard are oriented to the house....
The contrast in weather from one day to the next has been quite breathtaking to tell you the truth. But we are so happy. I'm sure there's WAY more snow up on the mountains. Just where we like it.
You will excuse me now. I have more paths to shovel before the 18 degree temperatures tonight.
(This is what you get for mocking the weather service. Get the shovel and let that be your penance Dill Weed.)
