Shopping
Mon Aug 11 2003

Today we canned tomatoes and cleaned house and did some laundry and then went shaaaawwwwppppiiiinnnnggg.

From about 1:00 to 6:00 we drove here and there, to this store and that, to the bank and groceries and hardware and art store where we FINALLY found the india ink. And then filled the car with gas. I was overwhelmed with the sheer volume of choices available to us these days.

What brought it into focus was that we were out of pepper.
I have read about the times when pepper and spices of all kinds were rare and incredibly expensive. At the store today I saw at least 5 different ways you could buy pepper. And at the discount store we go to, you could get a whole pound of the stuff for 2.69. White pepper, black pepper, pepper corns, finely ground or corsely ground, take your pick…. And just in case none of those tickles your fancy, you could get lemon pepper!

I am afraid that getting used to all this variety is tending to make us pickier and pickier about what we eat. I mean I admit it, I will hardly consider eating anything but Laura Scudders peanut butter now. If Skippy was all they had, I would probably pass altogether. I used to think Skippy was great stuff…..

So anyway, shopping is exhausting. And I was thankful to have help.

I don’t know WHAT I will do with all my free time now that I have finished reading Harry Potter. I will have to come up with a new hobby.

Your entry reminds me of that film called Moscow on the Hudson, when the woman sends Robin Williams character down to the shop to buy some coffee. He faints from the choice of coffee available. We are a consumer society. ;-)
