Command Pears
Wed Sep 18 2013

Pears still surround me here on the edge of the 100 Acre Wood. I decided to make some pear butter, which I have never done before. I used this recipe: http://firstlookthencook.com/2012/10/28/pear-butter/ Though I didn't quite have enough pears, so I threw in a couple of apples. Hey, it's MY kitchen. (I don't think anyone was questioning your decision there, Cupcake. Calm down.) I AM a little testy right now. I'm putting it down to the sound of a persistent Woodpecker who is hammering on my house. Sunny keeps thinking someone is knocking on the door. Of course this requires barkage of some kind. She feels obligated. I wonder if a Woodpecker is a kosher bird? (Good lord, you wouldn't.) I might. Anyway, here's the result of my efforts yesterday: Pear   The stuff is ambrosia. Yes, those are more pears in that basket. Yesterday they were not ripe enough for canning. Today they are. Pears are very odd fruits in that way. My sister-in-law and I decided that they are only properly ready to eat or can for a few hours on the day they decide to make themselves available. Very elitist, pears are. On other fronts. I tried to make a felted carrying case for my son who recently bought a Microsoft Surface tablet computer. He is a big Star Trek fan and asked for a command red and gray case. Well, I was so happy to make something so special and specific that I jumped right in. We measured it and I did my best guess at casting on enough stitches to accommodate it. Turns out my guess was off, because it turned out too small, and one of the yarns I chose for the gray did not felt as tightly as the red. So I'm going to have to start over, more's the pity. But I was left with this pretty nice little bag that had a kinda wonky top. Last night I decided to try something. I'm thinking I like the result. ST Red   If you didn't KNOW this was a failure, would you think it was cute? Would you think it was Jean Luc Picard? Benjamin Cisco? What's her name from Voyager? Oh yeah, Janeway. Though did she wear command red and gray? I just checked. Yes she did. (You have a serious problem. Star Trek is a fictional story. It's not real.) You hush your mouth. You don't know what you are talking about. Anyway, I probably shouldn't have told you that it started out with a different destiny. Now it has embarked on a new one. Wonder where it will end up? (The trash heap of history?) No, I think that might by YOUR destiny. (Let me just take care of that pesky woodpecker for you, shall I? ) Good luck with that.     lime wild

That looks yummy!! I looked for laundry pins yesterday at the old hardware store in Placerville. No luck. They had the same cheap ones from China like everyone else.

I love the way the bag turned out, you could make some more it is adorable. I really like the colors. Yummo on the pear butter, ooooo, smack smack go my lips. There might be some salivation there. I love pear anything, I especially love Harry and David's pear tea.

For eating, I actually prefer pears a day or two before they're fully ripe - they have a sweet crispness similar to an apple then. But yeah, for preserving you've got to hit the exact moment they choose to be ready.
