Renewed Shelter!
Wed May 21 2025

What a day I have had.

I am so tired! But in the nicest way possible. Tired from doing something creative and satisfying.

I spent two hours in the morning cutting the boards for the latticework roof of my garden shelter. I drilled holes and put screws on the ends of the boards that rest on the fencing. It will keep them from sliding around in the wind. It was getting too warm for me, so I just placed the boards in their positions and went in the house until the shade was on the garden in the afternoon.

Then I put zip ties on all the junctures.

The large window shade is leaning on the fence to the right. I had to cut all the cords off of it, but left the hardware, which came in handy to fasten it to the fence.

When I took down the fabric sides yesterday, I washed them and then spent the time today to hem them all on the sewing machine. Something I had never done before. They were pinned with safety pins. I don't know why I never took care of that before this, but it was so worth the time and effort!

It was fun putting the sides up in a neat and tidy way. Before they were attached in the most random and chaotic way, as I kept repairing and tweaking them over the years. The wind and weather is hard on them!

I also hung some new solar lights. I'm still waiting for dark to see what they look like at night!

Here's the before just for reference:

I'm so happy with how it turned out. But I have one concern. The board that goes across the opening in the front, holds a lot of weight, and the old one got bowed and I had to turn it over eventually to counteract that. I'm sure this one will do the same, because we must remember, when it snows, that roof has to hold up to that burden.

Anyway, I thought of a way to brace it. But I have run out of daylight to do it. Tomorrow I'll see if my idea works.

It's been a very good day. I feel blessed to have been able to make my little garden shelter rehabilitation a reality.

But now? It's time for BED! 🥱
