In The Kitchen - Ladies Home Journal
Wed Sep 22 2010

In the 1920's kitchen, [at least in the Ladies Home Journal world] there were modern marvels galore.

ELECTRIC cook stoves. I wonder how many people actually HAD one of these in their house. Seems to me there were most likely coal and wood burning stoves in most homes back then.

Oil was big too evidently....

I'm curious about that contraption in the left corner. Looks like an oil hot water heater. Interesting that it is hooked up to that holding tank. Maybe you just fired it up when you wanted hot water and turned it off otherwise. I wish I could do that with my gas hot water heater. Also, please notice that the oven is sitting on top of a couple of the burners of that stove. Weird.

Now we come to one object in this magazine that I really would not mind getting my hands on for real....

A genuine McDougal.

They come in oak or white. I think I want oak. How about you? I think this would be one handy dandy bit of furniture for my kitchen. Never mind that I would have to knock out a wall to make a place for it.

And in the miscellaneous department, some subjects just never change do they?

The conclusion of the article is that we eat too much and don't get enough exercise. Dang. I was hoping that they were going to enlighten me with some ancient 1920's secrets to weight loss, but alas, it was not to be.

In the 2010 world, whoah.... I just got whiplash. Back to the future whiplash. I think I just saw Dr. Emmet Brown whiz by!

To catch up to the present....

Sadie has been adopted by a very nice woman with a quiet home. I hear Sadie is already playing fetch in her new digs and is fitting in just fine. We will miss the little diva. On the last day she was here I found out she likes to play patty cake with her paws. Wish I had known that sooner. She really seemed to enjoy it. I passed on that bit of information to her new owner. Happy tails Sadie!

In other minutia...

Lo and behold, I washed my handmade socks for the first time today, and they shrank just the right amount to be much more comfortable on my foot! Yay!

Hub Man has gone walkabout to another state for a skydiving excursion. This MAY involve him skydiving off a certain bridge. He may or may not have what it takes to do this. I'm going on the record that I would not hold it against him if he decides not to. As a matter of fact, I would see it as a mark of intelligence if he passed on this particular activity and continued to jump out of planes like a normal person. But that's just me.

So now that I am here with my two vicious guard dogs and an indifferent cat for a few days 'alone', I decided to cook all morning and then coast for the next few days warming things up and eating what I have prepared instead of wondering what to feed myself.

I made a batch of baked oatmeal, a cold peas and rice salad, and a potato salad. I cooked brussles sprouts, and I have leftover brown rice and three boiled potatoes from the salads. Also there is a tupperware full of chocolate chip cookies I made yesterday. Hub Man took half of them with him for road food.

I'm rich!

While things were cooking, I washed three loads of laundry and ran the vacuum. Tomorrow I may do absolutely nothing but eat and read....

(Perhaps you need to read that article in the magazine again.....)

Oh, don't mess with me ( ).... last week at Weight Watchers I received my Lifetime member key. I have been at or below my goal weight for over 6 weeks. Now I get to go to meetings free! And only need to check in once a month.

Here. Have some peas and rice salad. You look pale....

It's about time she got some
work done around here.
Things look so well in hand that
I think we can take the afternoon off.

Tomorrow? Bring your gloves.
That garden is a disaster.

Sigh. It was fun while it lasted....

I don't have a McDougal but I do have a Hoosier cabinet which seems quite similar. It has the flour bin/sifter, potato bin, bread drawer, and ceramic over metal countertop. I adore that thing. That's where I keep all of my bake ware and it's got a TON of storage. I'll take pics of it when I get done painting it.

My great-grandmother had something like what has been described above. Hers was made of enameled sheet metal, (I'm guessing galvanized steel,) had a hopper/sifter for flour and drawers/bins for sugar, coffee and tea as well as storage space for all of the baking needs anyone could have. The cabinets on the bottom housed mixing bowls and bake-ware. She kept her oddball kitchen tools like her melon baller and her meat grinder (just like the picture!) in the drawers under the counter. I remember thinking it was the coolest kitchen device I ever saw. I would have it in my kitchen right now if it hadn't been left in her house when it was first rented. We didn't know that the renters would steal the cabinets, the claw-foot bathtub or the toilet. We were stupid about renters and if you go by my neighbor from hell and not the dozens of other renters we've had over the years, we haven't learned a thing.

My Sonoma County relatives had an antique shop for years and one cousin has a white, enameled, metal Hoosier with black trim and another cousin has one made of Oak. Their homes are filled with the most beautiful furniture. I love the atmosphere!

We are finally building a home and I'm hoping my cousins will be able to find a Hoosier that I can afford. I would die for the electric stove, also! I've checked out some of the reproductions but they are so expensive. I am grateful for what I have, though.

    Take care and God Bless!
