Don't tell the Little Red Hen, but recently I had let the chicken coop get into a sorry state.
I kept thinking... 'I'm going to get to that one day soon.' But other things crowded in and it got put off over and over.
WHAT? Don't you know how important a clean coop
is to a hen's health! What the BUK were you thinking?
I never get away with anyting around here....
Anyway, I didn't take any before pictures. It was just too embarrassing.
But after a few hours work, we had things back to normal.
The hens LOVE coop cleaning day, because they get all new oat straw, and there are treasures to be found.
Stray oat grains.
The search for them is serious business. Lydia was busy outdoors during this photo shoot. I think she was enjoying a little 'head hen' vacation. After all, the position was thrust upon her and I don't really think it's her favorite role. She is a very benevolent leader.
I put new hay in the next boxes along with the wooden eggs to remind everyone what the goal is here.
But alas, there have been no eggs for several days now. They have decided to go on winter break. Which is sad, but fine by me. They are listening to their poultry biorhythmns and I'm all about listening to one's inner self.
So for the time being, I will just have to admire them for their beauty, keep them warm, dry, and well fed till Spring.
And adjust my food budget to accomodate buying eggs from hens I've never met.
This will be weird.
But I'm sure I'll muddle through.
