The Return of the Sun
Thu Jan 22 2004

Yes Virginia, there IS a sun!

And it is out full force. Well, as full a force as it can be in winter.

And I can now say, sotto voice….. “I see real shadows.”

I finished reading Patricia McKillip’s book “Winter Rose”.
What a nice little story it was too. Magical things afoot. Wild in the woods trampings. Right up my alley.

She has a nice way with a phrase now and then:

“Corbet, he called himself to the villagers. But I saw him before he had any name at all.”

And I decided that “worn” clichés still sometimes work. For I smiled and nodded when she described someone as, “ignorant as a fence post.”

Sometimes the familiar works.

The one thing I learned from the book that I will remember as a writer, (I hope) is that once you have established the premise, you don’t have to illustrate it over and over. There were certain reoccurring episodes that got to be cumbersome after a while. One less would have worked for me.

Anyway, it was a nice book. And I have been having a hard time finding fiction that I enjoy. Which is so odd, because when I was younger, I used to read 2 or 3 books a week. I could not get enough. I guess I have grown pickier. Sad, but true.

That’s about it from here today.

I've always been partial to "dumb as a box of hammers" myself.

Have you ever read any of LeGuin's Earthsea books? It seems to be my month to be advocating those to people.

I don't know about you but I find my pickiness about books now is because I'm looking at them as a writer. Before I could read blissfully ignorant but thanks to my shiny education I know have literary terms for my discontent with certain authors.

Being confined mostly to bed, I'm enjoying the sun through the windows. I walked out to the mailbox and actually enjoyed the feeling of the air.

I believe when you start really writing your reading changes. I think it's because you can no longer simply read. Your brain is finding weakenesses and strengths all by itself and this is what makes you pickier. In my humble opinion, at least. ;-)
