Typing. Then and Now
Wed Feb 04 2004

Well, I finally got to work on the novel today.

I re-wrote 9 pages. And I am heartily thankful for word processors.
I can barely imagine typing a novel on an old fashioned typewriter.
I would rather write the thing longhand to tell you the truth.

I am glad I do not have to use the typewriters we used to have in high school either. Those things were not for the faint of heart. You had to hit those keys with a will. And talk about noise! They were all clack, whack, chinka, ding! (at the end of the line) and then zzziiippp, crash, to return the carriage. And the whole table vibrated while you were typing. You felt like you were driving a truck.

But this word processor is another thing altogether. It’s all frogs dancing on jello. T’poik, t’poik, t’poik, and then a soft clack, (for the space bar)
I guess you just can’t get away without a clack of some kind while typing.
In the old days, or in the new.

Anyway, I have to go into the other room, away from this computer for a while. It’s giving me a headache all these frogs dancing. And the green jello! It’s always green jello don’t you know….

(I think she needs a nap.)

T’poik !

Ribbit!

Great going, rewritten some pages. I love the descriptions. I think I prefer now as well. The noise is at least more pleasant. ;-)

i loved those old typewriters, they were so fun to use, even if the letters did sometimes get all tangled up ;)

And, me...I love the sound of typewriters. I remember my very first typewriter. It was a kids electric typwriter. I would sit down on the floor with it like Linus and his piano (oh gee, I hope Linus is the right name). Sometimes I'd play type too fast and two keys would come up together and get stuck in the middle. I thought people who could type without looking at their fingers were the most amazing and talented people...it seemed so unattainable then. Now the keyboard is a comfortable friend and the words tumble out easily....

I bought a manual typrewriter on eBay. The shipping cost more than the machine, but it's cute and clunky and I love it.
