Old Becomes New
Thu Feb 04 2016

Not long ago, my girlfriends gave me a birthday party. One of presents was a gift certificate to the local feed and garden center. I knew right away what I wanted to get with it. But that's another story that requires a photo essay, and I don't HAVE the photos yet, so I'll tell you about my other gift. It has only been in the last several months that N. and I, who share a phone plan, upgraded to unlimited texting. I used to kinda make fun of people sending texts. Little did I know... Now that I can do it, I find it a very delightful way to stay in touch with friends and family. It's like a mini email, with less fuss, that can be sent when people are out and about away from their computers. I could go all Luddite about it and spend  waste a lot of time examining the wisdom of all this technology, but frankly, I think I am OVER my Luddite tendencies when it comes to technology that involves personal connection. Now if you want to talk about random web pages I open that suddenly show advertisements for whatever I just looked at on Amazon 10 minutes ago... yeah, there is a creep factor to that. But we won't go there right now. Anyway, back to the birthday party. So my friend B. gave me a gift. When I opened it, I nearly fainted. It was her old phone. Her family had finally talked her into getting a smart phone, so she had a spare. DSC00122L Innit perrty? I had always admired it because is has a special feature... DSC0012L She told me that of all the people she knew who loved to text, I had the suckiest phone for the job. It was a regular flip phone that they give you for free when you renew your phone plan. So I was texting using the number keypad. It was SLOW! And I found out that I am a punctuation junkie. I just HAVE to use punctation and capitals to give my texts the proper inflection and emphasis.... so that REALLY slowed me down when I was trying to write a book  sentence. So now I text all day long. (THAT is a shockingly untrue exaggeration!!!) Note liberal use of capitals and punctuation in the above sentence! And I'm as quick on the draw and as verbose as Matt Dillon and Herman Melville. (I think I can say, with complete confidence, that those two names have never been used in the same sentence. EVER. Not to mention you have made two references to a certain TV show in close proximity. You know I don't approve of repetitive themes.) Well, YOU show up around here pretty damn often. (.....Ahem.... point taken.) However. The coolest thing about my new phone? The truly most amazing part? My phone has B's wonderful juju all OVER it!  I get to carry it around with me... 'Look! this was B's phone!' I tell people, isn't it rad? Now I'm just adding to its cache of cool by texting fun things to my friends and family with my gifted and beautifious phone that is MADE of AWESOME! Thank you B. !!         lime-wild

Congrats! Totally Rad! How do you stay on top of all the text archives? Perhaps The Queen has some advice for the Peasants.
