A Sunday Drive
Mon Jan 13 2003

We went for a drive in the country today. It was an overcast day, but still nice to get out and see some sites. We went up to the hills and drove on a lot of narrow one lane roads and saw a lot of vineyards. I keep looking for a really interesting rock to put in our front yard. I saw some I liked but they were way too big for the two of us to get into the trunk of the car.

When we got closer to home we stopped at an old community garden that is no longer in use to see if the asparagus is coming up yet. It wasn't, but along the edges of the garden someone planted some kind of narcissus years ago. They were in full bloom, so I picked a big handfull. They are spreading their sweet scent all over the house right now. I put one in a little vase by my computer. It is a little yellow and white ruffled marvel of a flower. I have never seen ones like this in the catalogs. I have no idea what variety it is, but am glad to have it. Such a cheerful little thing on a gloomy winter day.

When I first came to Sacramento, I used to get in the car and head "thataway." One of my paintings is a result of a getaway. There was a red barn out in the middle of a field, and it struck me as a charming sight. Eventually I used the photo as a guide to a painting. Wonder why I've stopped just driving around?
The flowers must seem like a touch of spring, even though it's winter now. The one by your computer may be a sport or mutation. Be nice if you could go back and get the bulb, but of course, that would be denying others the pleasure of seeing the bloom at another time. Besides, someone else planted it. 'Twouldn't be a nice thing to do.

It's amazing what just a splash of colour and scent can do to lift the atmosphere inside, especially during winter. ;-)

We love to do this very same thing. Long drives on country roads we have never been to see where they will take us. Always so many beautful natural wonders to behold.

Your spring flowers sound lovely! We need to walk to the garden one morning soon. It has been since summer that I have wandered there.
