A Long Time Coming
Fri Nov 03 2006

There are some things in life that come and go very quickly. Especially in this day and age. "Now" has taken on a new meaning. Fast is seen as a desired quality in almost all realms.

Thank goodness that we still have the ability to connect to things that remind us of the virtue of patience. Being a gardener, even a weekend one, can teach this lesson.

Here is what I harvested a few days ago....

Potimarron winter squash.

I planted those seeds a LONG time ago. Winter squash most definitely requires patience. They are the opposite of fast food. I have designs on them too. One for soup, one for baking, and perhaps one for a pie. Not necessarily in that order.

***

I did rearrange my computer room and hauled out two grocery bags full of trash. Though the computer desk is still in its place. I didn't get THAT ambitious. It is more comfortable and certainly neater in here, that's for sure. All I need now is some dramatic bit of art for a blank white wall, and a basket with some fake greenery in it to put in a corner.

***

The rains have arrived and we are all cloudy and dampy. Perfect bread baking weather. I've ground the flour. Now I need to mix the dough.
Where is that Hen when I need her?

"Did someone say bread?
I'll get the oven ready.
Do we have jam?
Where are the baking pans?
How many loaves?
Buk, buk, buk!"

Oh, there she is!

Ah home made bread the aroma drives me mad.
As being the water bucket boy for three or four buckets from the spring My Aunt would slice a freash still warm loaf and spread home made butter sprinkled with Brown sugar and pop it in the oven and presto want a treat. I can still smell and taste to this day.

I have experienced that lately I have an activity that requires a lot of patience and I find that this patience is being cultivated and used in other areas of my life

The Hen is like my cats. Off someplace hiding, sleeping. But at the mention of food...ohboy! They materialize like magic. And Missy is fond of bread. She likes to chase it across the floor.

Hmmmm...homemade bread. There is nothing quite like it. It can bring back so many memories and make new ones.

I have never heard of that particular squash either. Pretty color. Is the taste anything like the banana variety or does it have one all it's own?

Lovely squash, what recipe are you going to use for the soup (if you have one yet)? Very pretty, it's almost a shame to cut them. ;o)

Can you encourage me to do the same thing to our computer room this weekend? I seriously need to but the motivation is lacking.

Oh, yes, the joys of gardening. Those winter squash are wonderful! I've never see them before.

Sitting in my cluttered computer area, you are definitely giving me inspiration. I want to do more things back here in my off time to keep my skills and learn new things, and the mess puts me off a bit. Time to get the garbage bags out once again!
