Practice
Wed Feb 10 2016

Yesterday it felt like Spring here. The sun was shining, the temperatures in the 60's. I decided to walk to the creek and see how my little oasis was doing. I thought the winter storms may have deposited a lot of debris. But I found it quite tidy and only removed a few branches that the high waters had left on the sandy beach. But the real reason I went there was to practice... DSC00361 I really wanted to add that fourth stone, but his balance wouldn't allow it. It was so precarious already that any attempt to add something more threatened the entire thing.  I'm very fond of the dynamic of stones that rest on a downward angle like that second stone is doing. As long as it can find a little tripod of points, no matter how small, it will grip there and support an astonishing amount of weight. Then I worked on counterbalance. I couldn't get a really good angle to show the flat stone properly.  Next time I'll try to pay attention to the background. Though to be fair, all my usual balancing areas are completely under water right now.  :-) This also means my selection of stones was limited too. Most of them are thigh deep in icy water. DSC00372 It was good to spend some time here again. I feel like I know the place and the place knows me now. Let the new season of land art collaboration begin!   lime-wild

I absolutely love the rocks. I began to notice them several years ago in my travels and have since started to photograph them. They seem to be a feature in several places that I have visited - British Columbia, Denali National Park, Maine, Aruba and Norway. They always make me smile and yours have done the same. Thank you.
