Where has the time gone?
I'll tell you where, into the shimmering heat of summer, that's where.
Though there have been benefits.
I can only tell you the story, because I was so bemused and in awe, I did not even take time to go back into the house for the camera. Last night at 9 o'clock or so, I went out to put the hens to bed, and on my way back into the house I noticed something in the sky.
A rainbow.
A double one in fact.
It was so unexpected, so odd at that time of night.
And then the sky in the west began to turn the most amazing colors. Yellow/orange, then burnt orange, then a rather ominous looking red over a large swath of the sky. I was gobsmacked.
Turns out a lot of other people were too. We have a local Facebook page that is serving as a sort of community newspaper right now, and loads of people sent in photos of the phenomenon from all over the valley. It was very cool.
The only thing I have to show you is a photo from several days ago. It will have to stand in for what I failed to capture last night.
This morning I am suffering from too many nights of poor sleep due to the heat. We all are. The whole neighborhood of us.
But I managed to revive myself with something special.
Every other week, I drive out into the country
(I thought you WERE in the country Cupcake.)
okay, I drive further out into the country and pick up a gallon of raw milk from a friendly Jersey cow.
The stuff is quite simply ambrosia.
Each time I get milk there, I make sure to save a quart to make a large batch of baked custard with my own fresh eggs.
I've decided that this custard is so wholesome, it could practically raise the dead.
(Wow, you really ARE sleep deprived. Tap, tap, tap…. Your hyperbole meter just pegged.)
Whatever.
I have fresh raw milk. Don't mess with me. Today I'm superwoman.
