Downton Tea Time

So, yesterday I got my Republic of Tea catalog in the mail.
Every issue has a free teabag in it for me to sample.
This time there was an interesting twist...
I haven't tried it yet.
There's a masculine version too...
I guess Downton fever is taking over.
Even in the tea world. :-)

I'm watching Foyle's War now and I'm amazed at how the English turn to tea in times of stress. Personally, I turn to my friend J.D.

We do that here in New Zealand too. Whenever there's a crisis, someone will offer to make a cup of tea. I think it's not so much the tea itself, but the ritual of making it that's calming - it gives you time to breathe and gather your thoughts before you have to face the problem.

Not much of a tea drinker really but even I resort to a cup when I'm feeling low :p Downton is taking over though, I was actually sitting here looking at the pattern for the Downton quilt in my latest magazine and wondering if it will be next on my list! Not much for watching TV either but I do enjoy the show.

Rosamunde Pilcher's book "Coming Home" often refers to the making of a "restorative cup of tea" in times of upset or crisis. The first time I read the book I found it charming, but over the years I have come to believe there is much wisdom in it.
FutureCat nailed the ritual part... it is a calming act to make the tea. But there is another reason it is so calming. Tea contains l-theanine which is a naturally occurring, amino acid that promotes calming...... stronger in green tea, but also present in black. Hand me a cup of Grantham Breakfast Black. ;)
