Will It REALLY Thunder?
Tue Mar 28 2006

We are supposed to have thunderstorms here today. It's windy and cool. I keep turning up the heat in the house. About the only good thing I can say about our Spring around here this year is that the weather has been so cold, that the roses have had a chance to grow and bud, unmolested by the usual swarms of aphids.

But oh the poor peach tree. It is trying hard to bloom, but no bees are really out yet and if the cold doesn't get the blossoms, the rain might. We may have a scarce peach harvest this summer.

Pumpkin cookies are on today's roster. I suppose baking is the thing to do, since the back yard is a rather hostile environment right now. Though I have not given up on gardening entirely. I may toodle out sometime today and get myself some potting soil and start tomato seeds this week. I think I have five heirloom varieties this year. Plus my "thing to grow that I have never tried before" will be eggplant. This one: Who knows if it will grow for me?

But I won't know until I get some seeds going.

And I can't get some seeds going until I get some potting soil.

I can't get potting soil until I get in the car and go to Home Depot.

That's the tricky part right there. Getting up the WILL to get into the car.

AGAIN.

Hmmmmm..... Maybe I could just sterilize some of my own soil from the raised beds.... Now THERE is a plan!

I gotta go now.

I've never had eggplant, but am curious to try it sometime. Even if I like it, I probably won't grow it. Hubby and the kids are suspicious of any new veggies I try to serve them.

I am heartily sick of the rain. Why can't some of it go to Arizona where they desperately need some wet.

If you end up with an oversupply of eggplant, I'll be glad to take one off your hands.

    Shalom

Gardens are hostile all over this year. Mine is just too soggy to put anything into the ground yet. I had to put my bulbs in pots! I say steal some soil from outside and replace when the weather is better. :o)

I wonder how that sandwich would be were the innards put into a food processor to create a spread for the bread? It could also be used as a dip for dried toast I would imagine.

Pumpkin cookies? I've never had pumpkin in a 'sweet' context before and only ever heard of pumpkin pie as a sweet dish....you have me curious.

Mmmmmm, eggplant is sooooo creamy and smooth, and so subtle it goes with everthing....and supertrooper is right, baba ganoush is delightfully tasty! THAT is what got me hooked on the stuff....oooh, that and organic eggplant I had once at a fancy pants restaurant....yummy!

Good luck with the growing! :o)

It is sticking in my head that the Icelandic ponies and the Shetlands of Northern Scotland are related but I could be wrong on this score. Somewhere in my pea brain I think that I remember reading that the Vikings took Shetland ponies and bred them with their war horses to produce the Icelandic ponies.

The reason I asked was because the legs of the horses in your picture appeared very short yet quite powerful.

RYC: I bet the cookies ARE good but I would probably just make a muck of them as I do every baking project. Just eat one for me please as I absolutely adore pumpkin ;)

Yes, you might think that I could combine all three comments into one but I seem too scattered today to do that.

I've visited the Inner Hebrides and I have to say it's a totally different world, one that I could find myself enjoying immensely on a daily basis. The BEST water I've ever had came from an artesian well on Arran. It was soooo crisp and clean and seemed untainted, if you know what I mean.

When I grew African violets (lots and lots of them) I knew folks that would sterilize their potting soil in the microwave before using it for the violets. Then they'd complain that the house stunk. Umm.. hello?! LOL
