Wide Open Spaces
Tue Jan 25 2011

Last Friday I took a lunch and the dogs and a blanket out into the fields east of our housing development.

The weather was... well, perfect. There's no other word for it. Probably 70 degrees, only the slightest of breezes and lots of sun. And believe me, we needed some sun after all our fog around here of late.

Of course when in the wild, one's first thoughts must be of sustenance.

Here's my lunch...

Bread and butter, and cheese.

I'm not showing you the lemon bar I ate. It wasn't as pretty. But it was just as tasty.

The view from my picnic spot...

And the other direction...

Sunny contemplating the possibility of pheasants hiding in the distance.

I feel very blessed to have all this open space so nearby. The only thing about it is that for a large portion of the year it is not so friendly to us. Right now is the best time to enjoy it. The voles are sleeping, and the ticks haven't come out, and the grass is all short so you can walk fairly easily. In the late Spring and Summer? Well, it's a jungle of critters just waiting for fresh meat. Though I must say, every year we DO venture out a few times when the grasses are thigh high and the dogs have to jump to see where they are going... then we come home and have tick inspections. I can only handle so much of those creepy crawlers and then we are consigned to the suburbs again.

But for now we can go a little native. The dogs aren't the only ones who need some wide open spaces. I think we will have to do another excursion this week, more walking, less bread and butter and lemon bars.

I know!
Let's take peanut butter cookies instead!

    How lovely for you.
I know how you need the wide open spaces.
Pups must have loved it, too.

How will you keep your energy up with less bread and butter and lemon bars?

Bread and cheese, food from the gods. When we take the kids to the forest preserve we usually pack something similar along with a nice cold piece roasted chicken. Wow, my mouth is watering.

I can't wait for some decent weather so I can take the dogs for a good run. Most winters we've been able to take them to the forest preserve even in the snow but the windchills have been ridiculous this winter so it's kind of silly to make a 40 minute round trip so that they can romp for 15 minutes before their ears, noses, and paw pads get frostbite *sigh*.

RYC: I'll keep a sharp eye out for the mailman here in a few days ;). Thanks!

Miss Sunshine has the right idea...... peanut butter cookies would be just the thing to sustain you as you venture out into the wilds.

I do believe your fog has moved north. We have been gray and foggy for days. I've been longing for wide open spaces too so have taken to bundling up and standing out on the front porch with my morning tea. Tis more than a bbbit chilly, bbbut worth it to take in the view unobstructed. All it needs for perfection is a wee bit of sunshine....... and perhaps a peanut butter cookie to go with my tea. :)
