For some reason, our first hard frost has decided to see what happens if it doesn't show up to work. How long before we will notice?

What's NICE about this, is that with the early Fall rains, and mild temperatures, the grass is starting to grow all around. It's pretty, but confusing for November.

Day before yesterday, S. decided to come up here and help me with the Acorn Wars. She jump started me and we knocked out about half of the remaining mess. God bless her. Then yesterday, I went out there and raked up a bunch of piles, but could not face the final step of raking them onto the tarp and hauling them off to the leaf and acorn graveyard by the east pasture.

Today there is a storm rolling in and I needed to pick these up. Besides the turkey hoard roamed through the yard this morning and started messing around with my piles. I counted ... I kid you not my friends, 42 turkeys. They are kind of scary when they are in a big group like that. Yikes.

Anyway, I didn't get to begin raking until about 3:30. I thought it was going to be about three tarp loads, but turns out it was five because the acorns were so heavy. But as it was getting dark, I finished.

I like this part of the yard, but those trees drop so much detritus, it hardly ever looks this nice for long. In the Spring there are acorn catkins, in the Winter, sticks and pieces of bark, and of course in the Fall, leaves and thousands of acorns. It's kind of sad.

Oh, and I wanted to show you a mushroom I found while raking up leaves the other day.... sorry it's destroyed. It was totally submerged in the leaves and I raked it to death poor thing.

I'm pretty sure this is a Wood Blewit which is edible. I didn't do a paper test on it to see as I wouldn't eat it unless I checked with our local mushroom expert. But if I find some more, I might ask him about them. I can safely identify three edible mushrooms, and if this turns out to be 'kosher', that will make four in my repertoire.

Anyway. The war is over for this year, with a little help from my friends. 💗

So, this is the first entry Ive read since joining this! I just found it yesterday and I'm trying to figure it all out. I live in Wayne County NC and I know exactly what you mean with the acorns and leaves!! My mommas yard is covered and when the squirrels drop acorns on her shed, it sounds like a gunshot! lol We usually get together over there and have a big yard day but we've been a bit behind. Anyway, nice to meet you and I look forward to reading more!
Well, welcome to Dear Diary! I will look out for your first entry if you have a public diary! This place has a long history. Some of us have been writing here for twenty years. Seems impossible compared to the fast lane of the internet eh? Take your time, you will figure things out. You are coming in at a good time as Steve is planning an upgrade to make things a little more intuitive. He's a great Admin and very helpful if you get stuck.
