We are still a little wobbly here at Dear Diary, but the Admin is hard at work trying to parse out what the heck is going on with our cyberworld.
So while the window is open, I'm adding to the enormous pile of stuff that is stored on his servers, may he be blessed. :-)
Of all the things that happened while we were away from our blogiverse, this next was the most difficult not to be able to share with you...
Here's our Jill, the youngest of the flock, and the odd girl out.
My goodness, this new camera captures her beauty so much better!
She is a Wellsummer hen. All the other girls are Brahmas.
Anyway, several days ago, Jill laid her first egg!
It's was a beauty.
[I have since eaten it!]
Hers is the dark brown one with the lovely speckles.
And since she waited so long before she began laying, her egg was of a good size. Unlike the tiny ones that Phoebe and Goldie produced on their first few tries.
Jill has laid several eggs now. Sometimes they have speckles and sometimes not. AND true to her independent nature, she made herself a nest in the corner of the coop, in the quietest spot.
But here's the thing about Jill. . . She thinks I'm wonderful. She follows me around. She eats out of my hand, and likes to be held. Now to be truthful, the other hens also will eat out of my hand, but Jill INSISTS on it. She comes right up to me first thing in the morning, and wants to get her first bites of the day out of my hand.
We have a benign pecking order right now. No bullies in the group. But she is still at the bottom of that order. So I get to be Jill's BFF.
We like it that way.
In parting, I also got a really nice shot of Little Miss.
I avoid picking her up unless I have to, because she gets very distressed about it. And who would want to cause shy Little Miss unnecessary consternation? Alas, I have to admire her from afar.
And she is VERY admirable!
