The Ice Pond Filleth
Thu Mar 06 2014

The rain continues. Last night the wind blew ferociously. Sunny doesn't like it too much. She slept curled up under my bedside table. I'll bet she has a crick in her neck. It has now rained enough to start to fill up the ice pond. I may have mentioned it before, but I'll just repeat, that according to local lore, this pond next to my house was fed by a nearby creek through a little ditch that someone dug a long time ago. The pond was in a good location to make ice for our town. Well, the ditch has long since gone out of use and is washed out and disappeared now [though you can still see parts of it here and there up on the hill] , but there is still a draw with a drainage creek that feeds the pond. It has to rain quite a bit, and in consecutive days for the pond to start to fill up. Here it is today... icepond1   icepond2   icepond3   Sunny may not care for wind, but she isn't afraid of water.     lime wild

I've never really thought about where people got ice from before refrigeration, but an ice pond makes so much sense. How interesting to have a piece of history like that nearby you!
