Wow. Kids SHOULD be taught this stuff still. It's really a pity they're not. But I see the evidence of it everyday... just the grammatical errors in the newspapers alone are enough to drive me batty!
Good luck with it!

I hate to burst the bubble of everyone who now has a better appreciation for an 1895 eighth grade education, but not all of the facts are presented.
We would all flunk if we were plopped down in an 1895, 8th grade class, because like you said, we were not taught this stuff. :o)

It is a real test, but the info on snopes.com is interesting. Things like, they didn't have to answer anything on art or foreign language. Not much science and no government knowledge. Different times, different tests. It was good info. Good luck on the test. I couldn't pass the teacher's test they have on their website either. :o)

Oh, yes, it's a real test. I could have passed it back in 19uh, but not now. Especially the math. Quite truly, I've forgotten most of what I ever learned.
*blush*

The article on this makes some valid points, but in all honesty many subjects that should be taught today are either not being taught at all or are only being paid lip service. Grammar is a good example.
When I was in school grammar was highly stessed. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent diagraming sentences; my children were never even taught how. Today they barely cover the grammar and then wonder why the kids have so much trouble writing a simple paper.
It is true, I could not diagram a sentence today if my life depended on it, but because of all the training I can write; something my daughter had to be taught after she graduated from high school with a nearly 4.0 GPA.
Unfortunately core acedemics seem to have taken a back seat to make room for other subjects. My daughter (soon to be an elementary teacher) was recently complaining about how much of her graduate work seems more concerned with stressing multi-culturalism than with the how-to's of teaching children to read. I'd say that is the problem in a nut shell.

I will give you my review on Pirates for sure - I can't wait to see it.
I know I would fail that test . . .
You know, it's not hard to figure out why things seem to be breaking down in our country. We just don't have high standards or the ability to regulte the learning process in our country.
