The Ever Elusive Mr. Beaver
Mon Feb 21 2011

On Saturday, Hub Man and I took the dogs over to the creek to let them run themselves silly. .. which is pretty easy for them to do when they are starting out silly to begin with.... We also thought we would have another go at trying to catch Mr. Beaver in action.

As we stood overlooking his extensive watery real estate, Hub Man spotted something furry making its way up the bank on the opposite side of the pond from us.

OH JOY! We finally are seeing Mr. Beaver! "Wow." I said, "He looks bigger than I thought he would."

We watched as he moved along the bank and I started to have doubts. Wait a minute. Wait just a fur hat minute... that animal is WAY too graceful for a beaver...

After a few minutes of frenzied debate we finally agreed...

What we were looking at was a river otter.... A big beautiful one too. If ever an animal was perfect for its environment, the otter must be it. We followed him along the pond and up the creek where he hid from us at the base of a live oak tree.

Of course, we didn't have a camera with us, and frankly we couldn't have gotten a very good shot anyway.

But this is what one looks like.... from in interwebs....

So the ever elusive Mr. Beaver still holds his anonymity intact.

And the dogs are still silly.

(So are you.)

I'd have to be if I couldn't tell the difference between a beaver and an otter right off....

(I rest my case.)

Just as cool as a beaver, maybe more so.
They used to live out at my friends camp.
    Very slick little critters.

What a cute river otter! They were reintroduced here in the mid-90s but the result hasn't been too great. They released them too near a rather major street (relatively speaking)and they toddle out and get hit by cars all too often *sigh*.

I'm sure I told you that I saw quite a few beaver when I was growing up. They can actually get to 60 or 70 pounds if they have a decent food source. They are North America's largest rodent. And they are really quite scary when they're upset. Please don't make me tell you how I know this..........

We're ok. Once again, we've been incredibly lucky on this side of town, no damage at all. Lots of people not so lucky though. Feeling scared for some of my friends who were in the central city :-(
