Alder Creek Felted Bag Pattern
Wed Sep 12 2012

I had requests for the pattern, so here it is. Be careful! They are addicting!       Alder Creek Bag by AmericanKnitter Copyright 2012   Yarn: Cascade 220 For the body and Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool for the flap Needles: Size 7 or 8 dpn’s - and size 7 or 8 circulars to switch to when possible. One snap swivel and ring. (I found them at Joann’s. ChainChainChain is the brand.) Cast on 24 and knit 10 rows. Pick up stitches all around on four needles:  24 - 5 - 24 - 5 respectively. Knit one row even. Increase round: *knit 1, k1f&b, knit  till two stitches from end, k1f&b, k1* repeat on all four needles. Knit one row even. Repeat increase round once more. You should now have 28 - 9 - 28- 9 stitches on the four needles. If you want, you can now switch to circular needles, placing markers at the four corners, with a unique marker for the beginning of the round. Knit even for 6 inches from pick up round. Decrease round: Knit 1, knit 2tog, knit to 3 stitches before marker, (or end of needle if you are still using your dpns) knit 2tog, knit 1. Repeat around. Knit 1 round even. On the next round, place a solid metal ring or hardware on last stitch at the left side of the front of the work if you want to attach a charm later. Continue knitting around. For the next four rounds, purl the stitches on the front, and knit around sides and back. Next round: bind off purl front stitches knitwise. (You will be using one of the strap stitches to finish your bind off. Slip the remaining stitch from your right needle over to the left needle, making 5 stitches again on the side.) Knit 2 tog, knit 3 on left strap. Work icord for 40 inches (or a bit more if you want a crossover strap length) Cut yarn, pull through and slip a snap swivel over the Icord and sew the end in a loop to secure the swivel. Attach yarn to right strap stitches. Knit 2 tog, knit 3 and knit 10 rows of icord Cut your yarn and slip the loose ring for snap swivel onto the Icord and sew the end of the Icord on the inside of the bag. Work flap: Attach contrasting yarn (starting on the knit side) Knit 1 1/2 inches even stockinette (about 12 rows) Decrease row: Knit 2tog on the first and last stitches of the row
  1. purl
  2. knit
  3. purl
  4. Repeat decrease row
Work these four rows until there are 12 stitches left. Purl one row. Knit 2tog across (6 stitches) Purl 2 tog across (3 stitches) Pull yarn through and fasten off. Click the snap swivel to the ring before felting to avoid tangling. Felt. In my experience, the Fisherman’s wool felts tighter than the Cascade 220, so you will have to stretch and shape your flap when it’s wet to get a nice rounded shape.
