What's My Name Again?
Mon Nov 03 2003

I have spent a cozy day. It’s been overcast almost all day and we even had a few drops of rain. I finally turned the furnace on for the first time.

I was up very early and working on the story. I posted my word count a few hours ago. 3,351 of 50,000. Oh my. I have a ways to go! My earlier “writers high” has left for parts unknown after Friday’s success. I have churned out 4 different beginnings to my tale. None of which seem to capture the essence of what I want to say. So I finally left that problem for later and went on to the next part where things flowed much easier.

I had an English teacher once who said that in writing a story, it’s easy to get bogged down in detail at the beginning. And the point was not to tell every little thing that Bruce did before he left that morning, but to just “Get Bruce out of the House!” She was right. And I HAVE been trying to get him on the road….

Tomorrow I have to report downtown for Jury duty. Oh joy! My notebook will certainly go with me. As I recall, there are a couple of tables in the cattle call room where I could set up shop and scribble away. Although the tension in that room is so thick it might be hard to concentrate. Everyone is nervous that they will forget what their name is if it gets called. And some people actually are called two or three times before they respond. It’s a room full of poor souls that look like deer in the headlights. I swear it takes a year off your life to be in there for a day.

But at least this year I know how to take the light rail downtown so I don’t have to fight the traffic or find a parking place. Hallelujah and Amen.

The Light Rail is a great way to get downtown. No jockeying for parking space, no parking fees. Just get off the train and walk to the courthouse.

U-no-hoo has blocked me from leaving comments on his diary. Did I get too deep under the skin? How dare he refuse my words of wisdom! Oh well, his loss. Maybe I"ll just take me off his notify list. But no, I'd like to see what kind of fool he's going to make of himself. Heheh!!!!

I have managed to dodge jury duty the only time I was notified. The joys of living in a small town, there were no jury trials for the week I was selected. I probably won't be so lucky the next go round.

It sounds like you got a pretty good start to your story. Beginnings can be troublesome, so it probably is better to carry on further along. (I say that not really knowing what I am talking about.)

Thanks very much for all your comments on my diary. You always leave nice things for me to read, it's great.

i've always wanted to dress like a tramp if i ever get called up for jury duty (i.e. bare feet, scruffy hair, ripped clothing etc) just so they won't pick me, hehe
ok, perhaps maybe not that scruffy but scruffy enough that they'll turn their noses up at me

I did jury duty for a month (January this year) and I read an entire book and got halfway through two others, along with writing whatever the hell I was writing at that time, I forget what. But that's the great thing about j.d.: SCADS of time to read and write. I even did some word puzzles (like to keep myself sharp. R won't play Scrabble with me and CB can't spell, so I buy those puzzle periodicals). If you look at it as free time, it's easier to deal with! Good luck.

The one time I had to show up for jury duty, we were sent home. Case closed! There are a few reasons why I can't do jury duty and one is the fact that the County doesn't pay me the same salary my employer does and I have people who would like me to pay my bills. I have always wanted to be on a jury but was never called when it was a possibility. Have fun! P~~~

I'm impressed that you have managed that big a word count already, plus deeply envious! I remain blocked like a bad smelling drain when it comes to ideas put me down for two copies of your work.
