Plans Vs. Reality
Fri Mar 09 2018

So, even though it has been raining, blowing, and sometimes snowing in the last several days, it's still March. And that means when the sun comes out... your gardener's 'greeny sense' tells you it's time to start getting your hands dirty, even if it is metaphorically. I went out this morning in the spitting rain and painstakingly measured the parameters of my remodeled garden space. I mapped it out on graph paper. Here is the garden plan so far: DSC04501 Nice and tidy eh? Well, this is what it looks like in cold harsh reality at noon on a Friday... Still under construction. DSC04503 That section of fence just this side of the white chair will soon be removed. This is the old part that will be without fencing or partially anyway: DSC04506 I don't want to lose this cultivated soil, so I'm hoping to use some of my moveable fencing to block deer traffic so I can plant some rhubarb crowns. AND if things go well, I may plant row herbs that deer don't like on the far end that's covered with branches right now. Mr. P is slowly hacking through these with his chain saw. Here's the new section almost fenced and waiting for a gate which will be on the far side. DSC04504 And the raised beds: DSC04507 I kinda went a little crazy with the weed suppressing cardboard this year. But by golly, I don't have a crop of weeds to contend with either. So it ain't pretty, but it did its job. So back to the plan: DSC04501 You will notice that the new garden area is blank. It's a funny thing. My brain cannot quite grasp this new space. I'm not 'feeling' it. I don't know it yet. It hasn't been tilled. I have NO idea what the soil will be like. Though we DO have some topsoil to spread around once I get the tiller run over it a couple of times. And because of all this, I'm having a hard time knowing what to do with it. The contrast between the above plan and the construction zone/winter mayhem reality of the garden right now makes me appreciate that old saying... "Well, it looked good on paper." We shall see what kind of gardener's chops I have this year won't we? (I can hardly wait!) Yeah, I bet. Red Hen Lecturing My money's on the Cupcake. Little Miss Sunshine1 I want SWEET PEAS! They make my nose happy! And you shall have them, if I have to stay up nights and sing to them so they will grow. :-)   lime-wild

Hey. Whatever works! That cardboard mess has a purpose A good one! Enjoy your planning. It is one of my favorite things to do in the gardening department. :)

Your worms in the compost pile will love the partially broken down cardboard! It's going to be a great season!
