How Much is Too Much?
Yesterday I ended up hanging with my friend Ray. We went out to Jamba Juice and sat at the nearby Carl's Jr where I got Ray some fries. (I got him the juice and the fries because he picked me up) Chit chatted a bit and went to Brookstone. (that store with all the cool gadgets and massage chairs) Michelle sat on one of the chairs for literally an hour. While visiting a nice furniture store, we seen this really nice canopy bed. (me and Michelle always wanted one) Michelle actually laid on it for a bit. I told Ray, "that's what I'm talking about, but I want one with that tempur-pedic stuff". (that memory foam stuff, ahhh) After later also remarking on some nice house we seen, (saying that I wanted one) Ray said I had a Prince William mentality. I asked what he meant by that and he said that, "You always seem to want to live like you're rich". I reply, "well it isn't like I've lived rich at all; all my stuff in my house is essentially donated..and you know I've always been poor, so it isn't like I'm actually spoiled" He then goes on to say that I shouldn't always look to that for happiness and I reply, "I know I should be happy with what I have. I mean, even living in a crummy lil apartment, I got hot, clean water, something many don't have in the world. I don't want to strike it rich but I do want to have a nice house, something with a yard and a pool. Is that really unreasonable? What else am I to strive for?" He then is amazed at the nearby Curtis park (I told him the park and area was nice) and the conversation ends there.
On one extreme, we all should be happy for simply having a roof over our heads and hot water. Family and friends are to be the ones that provide our happiness. Yet, how many of you guys want to cut your internet? How many of you guys buy something that you know is unnecessary but oh so good? Then, what is reasonable and what isn't? Should I not want to be able to go on vacation one day? At what point does it go from depriving yourself to overindulging?
