It started out to be a good day....
Wed Jul 28 2004

Actually, I'm writing this the evening of the 27th. It is my grandson's 24th birthday. I made arrangements to pick him up from work and we were going to "do something." I was going to leave it up to him what he wanted to do. We ended up at Best Buy.

He found a game he wanted, and I said OK, that's your birthday present. I also found a solitaire CD that promises 500 games. I bought it with the expectation that Scorpion would be on it, in addition to the few that were mentioned on the cover.

I also bought a crossword puzzle CD. Yeah, I'm a nut. I like all kinds of word puzzles, but especially crosswords. And let me brag a bit here. I work the New York Times puzzle in ... yes...INK!

My expectation of an evening of games went downhill when I tried to install the crosswords. I followed the directions, and nothing happened. I backed out and tried again. Nothing happened. OKaaaay...

So I decided to install the solitaire games, very carefully following the directions. Nothing happened. As I read further, I was informed that if I use XP/2000, then I need to install under an account with Administrator rights.

Again ???

What are administrator rights?

So I emailed the Technical Support and got back an answer that told me exactly nothing. Also, I'm informed that if their answer doesn't answer my questions, then I can reply and include my operating system, processor, speed, and amount of RAM.

About all I know for sure is that XP/2000 Professional has Microsoft software. Also, when I'm logged in the little logo at the bottom of the page says I have 52.0 bytes? megabytes? of something.

During the log-in process, the screens flash so quickly, I can't catch any information about operating, processor, speed, RAM. So now what?

Oh, there's a Pause/Break key on my keyboard. Maybe that will stop the screens long enough to pick up the info I need to write back to these people and tell them what they need to know so they can tell me what I need to know.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!11

What I need is my own private computer nerd.

Shalom!

PS: I bought Baensidh (Banshee to you non-Gaelic speakers) a laser pointer light. I had him chasing that red dot all over the place yesterday. Kind-a wore him out I think. But I got some good giggles watching his antics.

    Control Panel - User Accounts
It will show you what rights you already have.
For a single-user PC, I'll be surprised if you aren't already set up as the administrator.
    Cheers

oh dear I hate it when things like that happen. You sit there full of expectation with the new thing you've bought and it doesn't work!

I read your comment on my diary about BUSH and what a jerk he is.. but I am a bit confused.
Did you think I support him? He is a crook.. I have a pix of his head in a nuclear bomb blast on my web site.. I do NOT support Bush!

What kind of dog is Baensidh?

Let me tell you what I know about 'administrator' on your computer; the person who's the main operator and who is listed as administrator is the 'screen name' you must be logged in under to be able to install. Try going to 'Control Panel' and do the 'install' or 'pick a category'
About your ram and operating info; to find out what exact operating system and such, you can go to MY COMPUTER and then at the top of the left hand side should be an option of 'view system information', choose this. It is not a flash by, but a page you can read and copy from. Also on some computers if you have the 'All Programs' option, there may be a listing of your computer (such as Dell accessories or HP accessories) Whatever brand your computer is, if you go to that option, it will have a service code.. This code tells the people at tech support everything they need to know.
Good luck. I have had similar problems.I have never had luck using tech support and stumble through on my own somehow..

    Have a great day,
    dreamer

Dang I hope you got the games up and running.
I was never good at crossword puzzles as my pea brain spelling has been a problem most of my life.
The Ohio school system dropped teaching phonetics
when I was in the second grade and didn,t go back to it for three years. My Mother had a fit as she could sound out and spell about anything. It has caused problems with most all my classmates of the same time frame. I have lived with a dictionary to this day.

XP drives me nuts, and I'm fairly savvy with computers. That whole administrator rights thing . . . yeesh! Especially when you are the only one using the darn thing.

Maybe your granddaughter could figure it out? It amazes me how much kids know about computers. *smile*

My husband is a gamer and loves to play solitaire on Pogo. He used to be a crossword puzzle fanatic before he got hooked on solitaire. I'm impressed that you do your puzzles in ink!

hehehe, the laser pointer sounds fun. Cute!

I hope you get your computer woes solved very soon. I am sure one of your readers will have some input! I should know more about these things . . .

    Bye for now,
    Love,
    Anne

All I know for certain is that Microsoft Windows causes Tourette's Syndrome.

I upgraded from Windows NT to Windows 2000 a few years back and it rendered my scanner useless. To fix the problem I have to go into the BIOS (backround software that actually starts Windows) and change a setting, but the geek I got the computer from couldn't remember the password he'd set up for it, so now my printer/scanner/copier only prints and copies. I also had to locate on the Internet and reinstall drivers to make my sound card and some other accessories work again.

I'm afraid to upgrade to XP. I don't know what else I might lose. I wish you luck, and second the motion that you ask your grandkids for help, as young people are extremely computer savvy these days.

RYC: I grabbed that pic from the Web, so those are not my hands. But they could be! ;)
