Thanksgiving with the family
Fri Nov 26 2004

Spent a goodly part of the day at Megan's.

I took some stuff for the relish tray, and the salmon I had prepared in my kosher kitchen. After it was done, I wrapped the whole thing, baking pan and all, in a couple layers of aluminum foil, so I could reheat it in Megan's non-kosher oven when it came time to eat. Also took some of Yetzirah's biscuits. (Thank you. They were delicious!!!)

Do you like salmon? This is the way I fix it. I get a thick piece, at least an inch thick. Rinse it with cold water, the dry with a paper towel. I put it in a baking pan skin side down, then lightly salt it, spread dabs of butter over the top, sprinkle sweet basil over it, drizzle lemon juice over, then top the whole thing with thinly sliced lemon. Bake in oven uncovered, 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Very good.

Anyway, the turkey smelled wonderful, but I don't eat anything warm blooded, so I abstained. Megan has some kosher cooking pans that she saves just for me, and cooked some veggies separately just for me. She is so considerate, and I bless her.

We also had some Martinelli's sparkling cider (kosher), and we toasted all our blessings and remembered our military personnel who are away from home, and their families who miss them.

After dinner, we had some tea, blackberry flavored. Mmmmm! However...as we were reminiscing, Megan brought up a particularly funny family incident, and we usually roar when we recall it. But this time, she came to the punch line just as I had taken a sip of tea. Have you ever tried to laugh and swallow at the same time? Take my word for it: DON'T!

The only bad part of the day, for me, was that Megan's pumpkin pie was totally unkosher, baked in an unkosher pie tin, in an unkosher oven. *sigh* And I do love pumpkin pie. I think I'll go shopping tomorrow because I know there are a couple brands that are kosher. And I'll have the WHOLE PIE all to myself. Oops, I just gained back that pound I lost last week. Tch!

My sister's son was home for the day, and that makes me happy that she wasn't alone. I wish we could be together for the holidays, but Tucson and Sacramento aren't just around the corner from each other. Oh, well....

It was chilly and overcast, and a bit of rain, but the day was beautiful.

Shalom

I like the idea of a whole pumpkin pie to myself, you go for it. I have had many times where I was in the middle of trying to swallow warm tea and something funny happened. Not a good feeling lol.

What makes a pan kosher..?? Also wine?
I can't understand why you could not eat the pumpkin pie.. Please don't get upset at my ignorance.. I just need to know.. You can't use utensils that have touched meat, I understand but.. why not the pie? And what constitutes a kosher cider?
I am glad you had a good dinner and your salmon makes my mouth water.. Yummmm.. Sounds very good.. I am going to use your recipe..
Your daughter is a gem... My daughter would never go to all that trouble for me... You are blessed and so is she
