The Patio
Thu Jul 31 2003

The patio is mostly put back together. Still don't have the bamboo shades up. It's been extremely windy today. I'd forgotten what a difference those shades make during the summer!

The spider plants really took a beating in the sun for two days. I put tea leaves all around and thoroughly watered, the put sphagnum moss all around to help hold in the moisture. Two of the four hanging plants look like they're beginning to recover. The other two will take a little longer. One small spider in a pot was sheltered under the table, so it's looking good.

The asparagus fern looks fine. Maybe it needs more sun than it gets. Looks even fuller than it did when I put it out on the lawn. The jade plant looks great. The Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti are recovering nicely. The Thanksgiving cactus was started from a cutting from a hundred year old plant. It belonged to the grandmother of my aunt (by marriage) whom I was taking care of when she died of cancer. So, of course, it's especially precious to me. The Christmas cactus was started from a plant belonging to my aunt's friend.

The geraniums have been sadly neglected over the past year, so I'm going to have to something about them. Maybe take cuttings and root them and make new plants. The white one bloomed recently. But not very vigorously. Yes, I think I really need to take new cuttings.

Re Ozone's question: The dog with the flower basket. I mis-described it. The dog has his front feet on the handle of the basket. It's filled with fake sunflowers. The dog looks like a cocker spaniel, and I've been thinking of getting some ceramic paint and painting the thing.

The aloe vera was somewhat sunburned, and I may lose part of it. But aloe vera is sort of like geranium. They're both tough. So if I lose a few leaves, more will grow back. In fact, when I was putting the sphagnum moss around, there was a tiny new shoot coming up. So, I'm not worried about that plant.

I am exhausted. It'll take me a couple days to recover from all that frantic activity. I'm thankful for the help of the neighbors and my granddaughter. At this point, it would have taken me DAYS to get everything put back together.

But right now I'm done. Done in.

Oh, yes, the apartment building looks very nice. Fresh paint and all. I saw the painters today beginning on another of the buildings. Pretty soon the whole complex will be done.

Now if we could just get some yard people who know what they're doing. They've set the sprinklers to come on mid-day. Imagine!

Shalom.
