Another Leisure League luncheon. As usual, the food was good. The lasagna was goopy instead of firm, but very tasty, nonetheless.
The "program" was Jewish Humor. Some jokes from the audience, some readings from Leo Rosten's The Joys of Yiddish. "A cartoon in an Israeli paper showed the Pope, during his historic visit to Palestine in 1964, with the President of Israel. The caption read: 'The Pope is the one with the yarmulke.'"
Any idea how many Yiddish words have become common English words? Try starting with bagel. Everyone knows that a maven is someone who knows everyone who is anybody. I hear Gentiles shlepping from grocery store to school to pick up the kids back home again. "You mean you shlepped that suitcase all the way home?" Of course you know that shlock is shoddy stuff. I've heard it applied to movies that don't even rate a B. What's your shtick? ask one comedian of another. Finally, we all know what a tushie is. There's more, and I may come back to the subject another time, but that's if for now. Let me know if you come up with faves from the Yiddish.
It was a fun afternoon, and it was a nice day, too. Little warmer than yesterday. But more rain is on the way.
And now I'm going to go hit my bed with a resounding thud. zzzzzzzzzzzzz!
Bless
