Beds
Wed Oct 15 2003

I had a waterbed for about 30 years. Loved it. No matter how many times I turned over, the spot was warm. All year round, my bed was the same temperature. In the winter I tossed on a blanket; in the summer, maybe a sheet.

I started having breathing problems when I was lying down, and was spending a lot of time sleeping in my recliner. Piling up a bunch of pillows on the waterbed wasn't doing a very good job of propping me up to a comfortable breathing position.

So I bought an electric (mechanical/adjustable) bed. Much fancier than a hospital bed, but the same idea. It has massage, which is an interesting sensation, and the cat seems to enjoy it. But, no heat. Also, even though I adjusted the head, the recliner was still more comfortable when I was having trouble breathing.

Besides, every time I turned over, there was a cold spot, and my feet were always cold.

A friend told me she always had flannel sheets on her bed in the winter time, so when I saw an ad that one of the stores was having a sale on flannel sheet sets, I thought "Oh, what the heck. Let's give it a try." Wow! what a difference. Flannel sheets are ever so much warmer than ordinary cotton sheets. I slept very snugly last night, and my feet were warm.

But I still can't adjust the bed for comfort when I can't breathe.

Oh, well. I guess you can't have everything.

Night-night, all.

We have a nice electric blanket. I think flannel sheets are a nice cozy idea too. The reclining bed is something I'd like, just considering the back problems. I don't have one now, but I spent a considerable amount of time sleeping in my recliner. I got to where I prefered it. I am looking forward to one day having another one. Sleep well and enjoy those sheets. I hope you can find a way to breathe easier too. Pleasant dreams. *smile*

So I take it you never needed dramamine to go to sleep? Everyone who criticizes waterbeds claims they cause motion sickness. Like you, I liked the fact that I didn't need to have someone else warm my spot like I do now.

I love flannel blankets. They're warm without the bulk. I used to have a really nice striped one people used to refer to as my horse blanket. It was great, but I have no idea what happened to it.

I haven't seen waterbeds in ages. I've heard they can be bad for the back. Have you heard of that?

Hope you get a good sleep tonight.

I had waterbeds for years, too. I, like you, adore them! One thing I really liked about them was that you could make it as firm or soft as you wanted, and they NEVER hurt my back, unlike the conventional beds I've had ever since.

BTW, the flannel top sheet makes an absolutely excellent *blanket* in summer when a sheet is just too cool, but a real blanket is too warm. They can be useful all rear 'round.

    Love,
    ~Cali

P.S. For those down under, this is a good time of year to get them on sale.

I have always wondered if waterbeds freeze over in winter. I've never slept in one. I am not wild about futons and sofabeds either. The mattresses are so hard and hot and the new ones give out funky smelling foam fumes. Oh, I'm a fussy one all right.
Give me a thin mattress, two pillows and a thin sheet for a blanket any day. It's normally too hot here for anything more.
    Love,
