Dierdre has spoken her first word.
Mama? Nope.
Papa? Nope.
Cat? Yep. And it's not a random vocalization. She's pointing to one of the two cats when she says CAT!
She has been trying so hard to talk ever since about six(?) months old. Her sounds have a conversational tone to them, but what comes out has not quite been English. Until now.
One of these days she's going to say Grammie!

- From:Dustbunny3 (Legacy)On:Mon Nov 03 2008I can make book on Grannie ALl RIGHT go girl!!
- From:MizzM (Legacy)On:Mon Nov 03 2008My kids' first words were also non-parental/grand-parental. My son's first word was "Ball" and my daughter's first word was "Dog."
Don't worry--once they get those first words down, they start talking a blue stream, and grandparents will very likely be a popular topic of discussion (in whatever form)! - From:Mamallama (Legacy)On:Mon Nov 03 2008Yipee!!
I always loved the quote -
We spend the first two years teaching our kids to talk and the rest of their lives telling them to be quiet.
I used to tell my youngest, "Honey, mommy's brain needs a break."
Boy could that one talk and talk and talk...
Hugs, Tiggs - From:404Error (Legacy)On:Mon Nov 03 2008When I was a kid my Mom used to tell me, "My ears are tired."
My response? "How can your EARS be TIRED? Ears don't do anything but hang there, on the side of your head! Who ever heard of your EARS getting tired?....." I probably went on like that for ten minutes, or until my attention span waned.
And then... I had my own kid. I now understand how one's ears can become tired. Boy, do I understand. - From:Dreamerbooks2003 (Legacy)On:Mon Nov 03 2008The little smarty.. She knows who her friend is.. Cat..more her size.
My first words were 'what's that' and I know it's because my mom would tell me the names of things and then say, 'what's that??'
Hahahaha
Oh how special... now you know once they start to talk that they don't stop!!! - From:Yetzirah (Legacy)On:Tue Nov 04 2008If I were you, I would call them on the phone.
You would have liked the two people who were manning their table. It was spread with chard and lemons! - From:Welshamethyst (Legacy)On:Tue Nov 04 2008My nephew Luke's first word was "shits"....yes, plural, not singular. His mother was appalled but I suspect he learned it from her since her fav phrase at the time was "isn't that the shits". She'd never cop to it because she's perfect, you know.
Glad DiDi is articulating. That seems a natural word for her to learn since she lives amongst them.
There's no stopping her now, lol ;). - From:Yetzirah (Legacy)On:Tue Nov 04 2008Why thank you very much!
I hope you enjoy your organic produce....
I didn't know what to ask not to get, as I am not sure what I might get. Part of the reason I wanted to do this was to try new things and rise to the occasion of cooking whatever is in season and learning to work with new vegetables. I'm really looking forward to it!
- From:CovertOps (Legacy)On:Fri Nov 14 2008Cat? Cat! CAT!
The mind boggles! "Cat" is not an easy first word!
But I am so thrilled! What a delightful baby Dierdre is! She is a darling!
