I have just come home from a moving experience. The title of this entry in English is Day of Remembrance. Today we remember the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, of that number 1.5 million were women and children. But we don't forget the millions of non-Jews who perished because they were "different."
We hear stories of government officials who believed they could negotiate with Hitler. And that brings to mind our current politicians who are trying to negotiate with tyrants. When, oh when! will people learn? Why haven't the government officials of Israel learned from the horrors perpetrated on nations by Nazi Germany. Why haven't they figured out that appeasement simply does not work. Not then. Not now.
I wish I could print the program here, but I will mention that there are six pages of Holocaust survivors listed who are relatives of members of the Jewish community in this city.
Maybe in a subsequent entry, I'll expand on the evening, but tonight I'll close with El Maleh Rachamin/For Martyrs:
Oh G-d full of mercy, who dwells on high, grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the lofty levels of the holy and pure ones who shine like the growth of the firmament, for the souls of the holy and pure ones who were killed, murdered, slaughtered, burned, drowned, and strangled for the sanctification of the Name. Because I shall give to charity in remembrance of their souls. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden. Therefore may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shelter of His wings for eternity. And may He bind their souls in the bond of life. Hashem is their heritage, and may they repose in peace on their resting places. Now let us respond: Amen.
Amen

- From:MissTick (Legacy)On:Thu May 01 2008It is very important to remember. By remembering we learn lessons. And we show that we care. This is the best we can do.

- From:Allimom (Legacy)On:Fri May 02 2008I got my egg cases from a local nursery. I have two egg cases, an estimated 400 mantis nymphs will hatch from these. Most of those will be lost to birds, each other and larger predator insects, but enough will survive to munch on the creepy-crawlies I would like to get rid of.
Unfortunately, they also eat the good bugs. Bees, ladybugs, lacewings and assassin bugs are as good of a meal for mantids as are caterpillars, cutworms, earwigs, ants and any other insect they come across.
If they have already hatched in your area, you can always find a group of children and offer a "reward" for the live capture of a praying mantis, delivered alive in a jar with holes in the lid to you to relocate onto the infested bush. Or ladybugs are also available at nurseries this time of year, which is a better aphid control method.
Good luck!
