Television

Some people think that television is for the brain dead, and I must admit that some programs are pretty dim. Especially those with laugh tracks. I hate 'em. But I'm here now to argue for TV.

How many of your children learned their ABCs while watching Sesame Street? How many of your children basked in the gentle wisdom of Mr. Rogers? There were other worthwhile programs for children, but those are uppermost in my mind. And by the grace of television reruns, children are still able to watch Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, even though that dear man has passed on.

There's another pogram for older children that is excellent. It's called ZOOM. The young people do funny and fun games, science experiments, and cooking, all with the notion that education is fun. I enjoy watching it because it's quality television, entertaining and educational. My granddaughter loves it.

Another thing about ZOOM that I especially like is the racial mixture of the young people who are the regular participants. They all work together and play together without any emphasis on ethnicity. And that's the way it should be.

Some of the best shows are on Expanded Cable: some wonderful old movies, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and some great sci-fi. There's good stuff to be found if you want to find it. There are even some pretty good cartoons.

For myself, I tend to the dramas. The so-called comedies are so funny they need a laugh-track to let us know when to laugh. Haha! And some of them are downright embarrassing. The language, the sexual insuations, the totally ridiculous situations. I don't recall that Laugh-In had a laugh track. Anybody remember the Smothers Brothers? Danny Kaye? Red Skelton? Jack Benny? They were funny!! Without a laugh track.

There is quality television for children and adults. Too bad there isn't more of it!

Shalom.

I love this entry! I did an entry entitled "What's Wrong With Junk Culture?", denouncing MTV and pop culture, but also an earlier one entitled "Childhood Staples" about all the good, wholesome and educational TV programs I watched as a child.
My brothers and I can remember 'Big Blue Marble', from which you can get penpals back when people still wrote letters, 'The Tomfoolery Show' which introduced us to funny poetry and limericks, 'The Electric Company' and '3-2-1 Contact', 'The Edison Twins', 'Littlest Hobo' and all those other children's TV series that are educational and teach children positive values.
You are right, Chaya, TV, like money, is NOT EVIL. It is how people exploit and misuse these things and then blame society or inanimate objects for their own failings that is evil.
    Much love,
    E.L.

Yes....there is some good stuff on TV, not much, but some...and what there is it will not be found on network TV, and chances are it will not be found on the heavily funded by the government, public TV either.

i'd have to say the issue is control
much like the internet there is a load of good, there is also a load of harm available at a mere click of the mouse
the tragedy is when people (especially kids) have no understanding of control and how much it will benefit them in life and, ultimately, for all eternity

I am careful about what I watch on TV, or maybe choosy is a better way to put it. If I am going to spend any time watching it, it will be something that makes me sincerly laugh or that I get something out of. I never turn the TV on for noise, or keep something on that is a "groaner" or poor quality. My daughter learned a lot from many good TV shows such as the ones you mentioned and others. If you monitor what they are viewing and don't use the tube for a baby sitter, kids can get a lot out of a TV show.

Hey! Sounds like you know your TV. I haven't watched television in so long I don't even know what comes on any more. Sad, huh? I hear lots of complaints about stuff on TV not being decent for family viewing. What has become of us??? If we wouldn't watch it, they wouldn't show it. I don't mean we as you and me but as a nation, collectively. Take care.~~ L
