It hits every once in awhile. Born Jews who know so little of Judaism. A young friend of mine, a mother, born Jew, bat mitzvah knows so little of the religion she was raised in, she comes to me for instruction.
She was here for two hours this morning asking questions. Then she said that I know so much, that she considers me a mentor. Me!
Then she asked about Kaballa. Whew! now that's a hard one to explain. According to the teachings, there are three levels of understanding of the Torah. The "what you see is what you get" level of understanding. Then there's deeper "hidden" understanding that one gets from studying Torah. Then there's Kaballah. That is the nth degree of esoterica.
It was a pleasant visit. She's a nice young woman, beset by an undiagnosed illness that leaves her chronically fatigued and open to any "bug" that comes along. It makes me happy that she sees me as a friend. Her very shy son likes me, too.
