National On The Town was celebrated in Yacolt this evening. Notice the National? I don't remember ever seeing such a thing advertised in Sacramento. And it's been going on for several years now.
Anyway, a whole bunch of people showed up along with representatives of various city-county entities. I picked up various fliers, and even a picture of the representative of the Sheriff's office's K-9 branch. Quite a handsome fellow. The Sheriff's boat from the Search and Rescue branch was quite popular with the boys. Oh, yes, and you can believe me when I say the fire engine got a lot of attention. The ambulance got some walk-ins, but it wasn't nearly so interesting as the fire engine.
Two of the women from the fire fighters unit were there. They don't go on fires such as wildfires, but they do go to house fires and the like. They're not big women, but I wouldn't want either one of them mad at me. Oh, yes, and they're volunteers!!! One woman said she was doing this for ten years.
The Community Food Bank was represented, too. I was told that they currently serve about 400 families in North Clark County. NCC covers Yacolt, Battle Ground, Amboy, and a couple other towns whose names I don't remember at this moment. Anyway, five different ZIP codes.
The Sheriff's department was passing out free gun locks. I don't know if the NRA is busy in this area, but gun ownership is not a problem here. Megan said that law enforcement doesn't readily follow up on "gunshots in the area." But if someone is reporting child abuse, they're here almost before you can hang up the phone. If you call and say "I've been shot," then they do come promptly. The ambulance would probably be here before the sheriff, but he wouldn't be far behind.
Taken this all together, and what I've experienced here in my two weeks, I even more want to live here. I'll never own a gun, but I would feel safe without one. When we went to the park, Megan left the screen door closed, but the main door open. I can't imagine doing that where I live! We weren't but a couple blocks away, but still....
Hotdogs, hamburgers and chips were available for a nominal cost. Sodas also. Fresh water could be had from a barrel strapped to the side of a replica Conestoga wagon. And from the park's drinking fountain.
There was a pile of items to be given away during a raffle. Megan's number got her a large bag that she is using for her lunch and other stuff she takes to work with her. An attached keychain in the bag serves as an anchor for her ID cards, which she has misplaced from time to time. Now she can leave that huge tote home and save her back.
Lots of humidity here, but I haven't been bothered. Must be the temps in the mid-70s to mid 80s.
Bless
