Dear Miss Tick,

Yes, I ought to write more often, it's true. But laziness sets in, and I think maybe what I'm doing isn't all that interesting, anyway.  However, you could put your Comment icon back on your diary. I could make a comment, and you'd know that I'm still kicking up my heels.  All that is beside the point when you care enough to write.

I went shopping this evening and it was brought home to me again why I should not move up North.  Much as I love my daughter and much as I miss her,  it's not that great an idea.  The cold sets off my asthma. I was lingering around the frozen food section in the market, trying to find something interesting, and breathing that icy air. All of a sudden, I'm having trouble breathing.  My inhaler?  Oh.  I guess it's in my other purse.  At home. All three of them.

It never occurred to me that I would write something like the following:

A 13 year old girl I know is Jewish. She's in public school for the first time, and it hasn't been all that positive.  She told me that she was being teased about being Jewish. I asked if she was the only Jew in that school, (knowing full well that she wasn't), and she confirmed that she was not. However, it is her first year in that school, and her first year getting acquainted.  She finally told her mother.

Mom goes to the principal and complains.  The principal says "She should just ignore it." Oh boy! A comment like that is like waving a flag at a very angry bull. (Actually, she had tried to ignore it.)  So Mom goes to her Rabbi, and the Rabbi contacts the Anti-Defamation League, and they make an appointment with the principal.

Principal gets her act together, expels the ringleader, and suspends the other boys who were in on the teasing.  I say teasing, but it was much cruder than that, and I really don't want to set it down on paper.  I'll put it this way: it turned my stomach some of the words being used.

A good end to this.  Mom and Girl were invited to a big ADL do in San Francisco, where she was invited to tell her story.  I got to spend overnight with Little Sister.  We had a ball, but I thought that child would never get out of the tub, and then she wanted to read a while when she finally got into bed. I nixed that, as she was already an hour late getting to bed.

Actually, I was surprised that she did go right straight to sleep. There was a FIELD TRIP the next day, and she was all agog.  She informed me that we would get up at 5 o'clock, so  she'd be sure not to miss the bus that will leave promptly at 8:00 am.  I set her straight on that one, too. Three hours before she needed to be at school? I don't think so.  I don't know what time she woke up, but she let me sleep until 6:20.  Even at that, she was ready 45 minutes before it was time to go to school, which is a five minute drive away.

I love that little kid!!

Bless

Oh? What did I get from the freezer?  Pizza and pierogies.  Pizza for tonight.

why thank you, Chaya, I was just wondering how you've been, that's all...you know, sometimes we have to make an effort not to be lost off the radars of people we care about. we never know how long we will walk with them together. as for the comments...it's a valid point, I'll put them back when I'm ready...in the meantime...do you still have my e-mail? be well and do write about things. because when you write, you do it so well.

I would miss you if you didn't write.

It still amazes me that in this day in age that sort of thing still happens. I pray for a time when we don't have to worry about those types of things anymore. Tsk. Tsk.
