Skinny-Minnies, don't bother to read

Ok, here's the latest skinny on obesity. From the Sacramento BEE, 21 August2007: It's not our fault we're fat.

Virus linked to how humans grow fatter

ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON - In the buffet of reasons Americans are getting fatter, researchers are piling more evidence on the plate for one controversial cause: a virus.
New research announced Monday found that when human stem cells - the blank slate of the cell world - were exposed to a common virus, they turned into fat cells. They didn't just change, they stored fat, too.
While this may be a guilt-free explanation for putting on the pounds, it doesn't explain all or even most of America's growing obesity problem. But it adds to other recent evidence that blames expanding waistlines on more than just supersized appetites and underused muscles.
For several years, researchers have looked at a possible link between obesity and this common virus, called adenovirus-36, from family of viruses that cause colds and pinkeye in people. They had already found that a higher percentage of fat people had been infected with the virus than nonfat people. They had exposed animals to the virus and got them to fatten up and even found a gene in the virus that causes animals to get obese.
But ethical restraints kept researchers from exposing people to the virus to see what happens. So they did what would be considered the next best thing, said Nikhil Dhurandhar, who headed the research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the Louisiana State University system.
They took fat tissue from people who had liposuction, removed adult stem cells from the tissue and exposed the cells to the virus in the lab. Adult stem cells can regenerate and turn into different types of specialized cells to help the body heal itself.
More than half the stem cells exposed to the virus turned into fat cells and accumulated fats, while only a small percentage of the non-exposed stem cells did the same, said researcher Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, who presented the results Monday at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in Boston.
"It's the first time we see an effect in human cells," Pasarica said in a phone interview.
If a viral cause of obesity can be confirmed, a vaccine could be developed, maybe within five to ten years, to prevent the virus from making some people fat, Dhurandhar said. However, it wouldn't help people who already are obese, he said.  [Oh, shoot ! There goes my excuse.]
Outside experts are intrigued, but worry about people blaming all obesity on a virus, when it may be just one of many causes. "The cause for obesity in everyone is the same," said Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "You eat more calories than you burn up."
But there are many causes that trigger overeating and extra storage of fat in the body, including the virus, Klein said. But he said he considers the virus only a small factor.

So there you have it folks. Some of us may have been bitten by a virus.

Bless the day

It sounds to me like one more reason to discriminate against fat people. :-(

I don't buy it.. The portions *(restaurants, and fast food take outs) are larger, there is more fat in food, fast food is being consumed more and real home-cooking happens less!!! Maybe there is a virus - but everyone can also cut back on the food they eat, eat more healthy and exercise!!!
I notice the kids here -. the kids that run around nonstop are all thin.. The ones that only move their arms to put food in mouth and sit around watching the other kids play are all overweight A LOT overweight !!! And it is a very sad thing to see

If you?re finger lickin? curious, you can have your adenovirus-36 titers assessed for a cool $450, brought to you by a lab that has done nearly all this research.
It?s the same lab that squared off in Costco Magazine with Dr. John last year about whether obesity was a medical disease, or not.

i think it has more to do with DNA.. & what genes you are born with..my daughter for example is like you say.. struggles with weight all her life and her daughter also... just looking at an ice cream cone puts on a pound.
I have always had eating disorders the other way.. Too thin.. was called chicken legs and turkey butt and stuff - even my doctors nurse says I'm loosing too much weight and then on the scales.. i've not lost an ounce!!!!!!!

You know nobody ever thinks twice about saying.. " peggy you are too skinny"; but if I was to say.."you are fat".. ya know?? it hurts both ways..
I know it works both ways.. who is to say what the ideal body image is... ????
I wish we could just be happy with what we have been blessed with that works, and doesn't ache all the time

But I sure wish I had your problem. Don't I?

No you really don't... I have been ashamed and hurt by this all my life..
Truly, it is just as insulting to be told over and over, all your life, that you are too skinny and that you are flat chested, and that you would look better with some meat on your bones.. Really if we could only walk a mile in one another's moccasins maybe then we would all be a bit more careful what we said and how we judged others
    you know??
That is the only point I was trying to make... I know I get a bit touchy about it.. Sorry..
It's a bone of contention with me

I swear, it never fails. They figure out what causes something, and then tell you there's nothing they can do about it. sigh.

RYC: You know, I thought about you when I wrote my entry, and wondered what you'd think. I'm glad you agree and approve!

    Stay young, girl!

The article must have been written in the great American tradition of blaming everything but their lack of self-discipline and judgment.

If you're slacking at work, it's because you are affected by your divorce, or are facing sexual harrassment, or are put in an environment which is not conducive to work.

If your kid is inattentive and lazy at school, you'll say he has ADD or dyslexia. If a kid is plain rude and aggressive, he might even be an Indigo or Crystal Child! Gasp! Wow!

If you eat too many fast food meals that are 2 to 3 times the portion of a meal an average Southeast Asian has, and you gain weight because dessert to you is not fruit and plain water, but pies and cakes and sugar cookies, then it's all the viruses' fault!

    God Bless America!

    Love,
    E.L.
