Anyway, I went to Liesure League luncheon yesterday. I'm really pretty much of an introvert, a loner, but when I go to these luncheons once a month, I'm with friends. I may not know them very well, or be able to call them by their names (that's why we wear name tags), but they're friends. And I'm comfortable chatting.
A month ago I was called by one of the coordinators of the luncheons and asked if I would mind picking up a lady who can't drive because she's still recovering from shoulder surgery. I had earlier left a note saying that I would be glad to pick up people who lived in my general area.
So I called the lady, Leah, and told her I'd be glad to take her with me, and she was absolutely amazed that a total stranger would call her and offer her a ride. Well, I did assure her that her number was given to me by a mutual friend. So we went to the luncheon together. She's a recent widow, and very lonely. I think this may develop into a nice friendship aside from the LL luncheons.
Also, met another couple, Irv and Rita, and I may write more about them at a later time, if they give me permission to reveal their private lives. Anyway, Irv dropped by today to drop off his Memoires, which I had expressed an interest in reading. He's had an interesting life!
Leah invited me in for a cup of tea, but I swas expecting my daughter to arrive, and asked for a rain check. I told her I'd call one day and tell her to put on the teapot because I was coming over. I really do want to follow up on that one.
So, when I got home, Megan hadn't arrived yet, so I hied meself to the Rite Aid to make some photocopies of stuff I want to send to a friend (you know who you are). By the time I got back Megan was waiting for me. My watch needs a new battery. It's running slow, and I thought I had more time than I did. Oh, well.
We had a wonderful visit. My daughter is a great companion. She's smart, funny, a thinker, brassy, has a foul mouth sometimes which she curbs out of respect for me. And I thoroughly enjoy her company and wish I could have more of it. She intended to comfort me over the loss of Miki, but the LL luncheon had me in such good spirits that we were able to just enjoy each other. I did shed a tear or two, but the worst is over.
Oh, yes, the entertainment. A couple (married) who have been dancing together for many years. They danced to Strauss waltzes. He wore a cutaway with white tie and a red sash. She wore a beautiful white with green trim, full skirted (of course) ball gown. All very elegant! When she whirled, her skirts flared out to show her lacey pantaloons and white stockings. All very beautiful. I love to dance, and I kept thinking "I wanna dance! I wanna dance!" Of course we would have been happy to stay the rest of the afternoon as long as they were dancing. But the luncheoneers usually start departing from 1:30-2:00, and the entertainers usually put on at least a half hour show.
I really look forward to these monthly luncheons. The food is great, the entertainment is great--and all for $5.00. It was $4.00, but prices are going up everywhere. Anyway, where else can you get good food and two (or more) hours of friendship and fun for a price like that?
OK, now I gotta get ready for the Sabbath. Y'all have a wonderful weekend!
Shalom
